I found Matthias Lehner at 64.53, 44.04 in The Valley of Lost Hope in Icecrowne. He offers three strange quests which seem out of place for his location, one called "Return to the Surface" and referencing a portal behind him. There's no such thing and the NPC is not underground. I suspect his placement is incorrect at this location and he belongs in some underground location.

I found him underground today, but the quest http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?quest=13282 which references a portal behind him... no portal exists at the moment.

On a different note: the name Matthias Lehner is an anagram for Arthas Menethil, which would make sense considering you also find a frozen heart down when you meet him.

Nevermind. Matthias Lehner looks to properly be at 53.83, 86.98 in the zone beneath Icecrown Citadel known as Naz'anak: The Forgotten Depths. He is reached by doing the quests of Sergeant Kregga. It appears he is appearing in two places in WotLK.

It list on this site that this npc is located at Sindragos Fall and gives out the quest 'Where Dragons Fell" But I havent been able to find him ingame. Any hlep as to where this guy is or if not him the real quest giver?

NPC also found at 71.56,37.53 at Sindragosa's fall, offering the quest Where Dragons Fell.

Apparently he's supposed to be in different places or perhaps phases to different places based on your progression along his quest lines.

It may be pure coincidoink, but Lehner (written "Lenher" on the page that brought me here and started this train of thought) sounds kinda like the German word Lehnsherr, which means liege (lord), which again sounds a lot like lich....

*edit* durr, of course I know what it means, I just wanted to make an assumption why they chose this German(ic)-sounding arrangement of letters.

It all starts on the Orgrim's Hammer (horde) when you get the quest "Opportunity". You get to speak to Sergeant Kregga who is below the citadel. She will send you to missions close by. During the quest Blow it Up!, things go wrong. The fuse go off fast and you get thrown down by the blast into the big hole at middle.

After a long fall, you end up at Naz'anak: The Forgotten Depths. In the water you fall is a frozen heart which is actually Arthas' heart. A few simple quests down here send you to Matthias Lehner who is actually the ghosty child Arthas :)

He sends you back to Koltira Deathweaver on Orgrim's Hammer. You get to repair a wrecked demolisher and annihilate scourge in Valley of the Last Hope with it.

Next quest sends you to First Legion Camp in the valley where you raise undead as Arthas!

After that you pay another visit to Koltira who than sends you off to Sindragosa's Fall to kill some The Cult of the Damned lackeys.

You meet Matthias Lehner here once more and get to collect Whelp Bone Dusts from nearby whelps.

Doing this quest will let you watch a cutscene of Sindragosa being raised by Arthas (It is the scene in the WotLK cinematic) and you are set off to Court of Bones to meet Matthias Lehner there.

This time the boy will ask you to use a nearby bloodstained stone and you fight Illidan as Arthas himself! (This is exactly the fight that took place in the WC3:TFT closing cinematic)

When you defeat Illidan, you are sent to Koltira Deathweaver once again. He asks you to ask help from Tirion Fordring.

Tirion Fordring then asks you that you meet him outside of Icecrown Cathedral when you get a disguise from a cult acolyte.

You talk to Tirion to start the event. He goes into cathedral with a few Argent guys. Arthas then shows up and disguise fails. A fight brokes up and Tirion touches Arthas' heart to check if any humanity is left there. Seems not... He has fully become The Lich King now.

After you watch the events, you meet with Tirion back at Crusader's Pinnacle and collect your rewards.

I believe these are all the quests you need to do for this chain but it may be that there are other quests, which belongs to other Icecrown chains, that you need to complete to get the quests in this chain.

I maintain that The Lich King isn't Arthas. That the being we know as The Lich King, while possessing Arthas flesh, is in no part the Arthas Menethil that was lured to take up Frostmourne to save his people. Whether it will be possible to save Arthas from his possession is a different story...perhaps the telling of which is in Wrath.

If he is Arthas' humanity, he makes an appearance in Arthas: Rise of the Lich King. He's banished, along with Ner'zhul, from the former Prince's conscience.

Matthias Lehner is an anagram for Arthas Menethil; this is the pure and innocent fragment of Arthas' soul, his humanity, that left when he fully became The Lich King. This essence manifested itself in a ghostly boy.

OKAY! Are you like me and you installed a quest helper and are just trying to finish Icecrown: The Final Goal for Loremaster of Northrend and keep seeing this kid, but have no idea where he is/where his quests are? Let me explain it to you, Alliance and Horde alike.

To get to Matthias Lehner's quests, you first need to get the quest Exploiting an Opening/Opportunity from Thassarian/Koltira Deathweaver - this can be easy to miss, since he offers daily quests. To open up Thassarian's quests, you must first talk to Marshal Ivalius/Warlord Hork Strongbrow and complete The Skybreaker/Orgrim's Hammer.

After doing Thassarian's/Koltira's chain and getting Exploiting an Opening/Opportunity, head down to 50,85/54,82 (for Horde) and look for a crack in the wall. Captain Kendall/Sergeant Kregga will be in there, and s/he will give you Securing the Perimeter/Establishing Superiority. After this extremely short chain, you will fall into a very deep hole, and this is where you will meet Mathias Lehner for the first time! The first quest he gives you will be Time to Hide/Time to Hide. Yay, you've started on Matthias Lehner's questlines! If you want the full info on the rest of his questlines, keep reading.

Take the portal back up to the surface when you've completed his quest, then fly back to the Skybreaker/Orgrim's Hammer for Return to the Surface/Return to the Surface. Take Field Repairs/Field Repairs. Once you turn this in to the demolisher, who else will appear but our new anagram-loving friend! He will give you Do Your Worst/Do Your Worst. Hop in your demolisher, have some fun, and when you're done, head over to 64,43 to turn it in and start Army of the Damned/Army of the Damned. Tip: Dismount after you've raised all 100 Ghouls to turn it in. Take Futility/Futility (H) and return to Thassarian/Koltira.

Now you'll get Sindragosa's Fall/Cradle of the Frostbrood. I don't think you actually have to, but you might as well. While doing this quest, lo and behold, who shall we meet again at 71,37? Where Dragons Fell/Where Dragons Fell. Turn it in, watch what he has to show you, then pick up Time for Answers/Time for Answers. While on your way over to the Court of Bones, go ahead and turn in Sindragosa's Fall/Cradle of the Frostbrood - it's on the way. You're done with quests from them for now. Continue on to the Court of Bones.

Meet with Matthias at 49,73 and pick up The Hunter and the Prince/The Hunter and the Prince. Become Arthas, kick Illidan's ass, and now you're on Knowledge is a Terrible Burden/The Hunter and the Prince. Return to Thassarian/Koltira. They'll give you Tirion's Help/Argent Aid. You'll get Tirion's Gambit/Tirion's Gambit. The guy you want is outside, on the stairs, around 45,76. Kill them, put on the hood, then run over to the big blue fire around 44,76 and talk to Tirion - he'll be near other Disguised Crusaders. Talk to him and tell him you're ready. (By the time the long scene is over with, if you don't take the portal quick enough, Lich King WILL one-shot you... I say, at level 100 in 703 ilvl gear :P)

Congratulations! You've completed this very fun, lore-filled questline. =) This will put you closer to finishing Icecrown: The Final Goal by 18 quests.

This should all be accurate, as I wrote this while I played, however, keep in mind that I did not do this on Horde. I had to dig up the Horde equivalents via Wowhead, so it might be a bit off. Hope this all helped!

For some reason, this npc appears more transluscent than usual and completely headless in my game; I haven't seen anyone else seeing it like that, so I don't know if it's just a bug in my game, or a change applied recently, for whatever reason.
