They turn into shadowy ghosts that are immune to all physical attacks. Poisons and other DoT applied before they turn will continue to tick but no new effects can be applied.

A hunter's arcane shot will still damage them.

Its in this phase they use their AoE shadowbolt spamming it as an instant cast spell.

Managed to deal with these nasty mobs as a rogue solo on Scholo.
This is what you do:
Make sure you get 5 stacks of deadly poison. Bleeding dots doesn't work on them, so you gonna have to rely on this.
Build 5 combo point on them and save your energy. Luckily you will get them down to not less then 30%. When they get to 30-40%, use your eviscerate. If they are not dead, they will be around 5%, which should be enough for your deadly poison dots to do the job.
In case it doesn't kill, you can also vanish and pop an extra damage before their life regen. Make sure you wait for them to get back to the human form, but don't wait too long otherwise they will quickly return to full health.
This is probably the biggest problem you will find if you're trying to get the final boss on scholo, but if you manage to do it right, you won't even need to use vanish.

It never stops amazing me how retarded some of vanilla WoW is... Mobs completely immune to physical dps is just the ultimate stupidity (alongside ones completely immune to all magic).

Exactly how are classes without any other means than physical dps supposed to be dealing withn that? Like... you know... warrior tanks?

I can confirm that neither Shadow Oil (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=3824), nor Frost Oil (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=3829), works.

Neither does the Arcane Strike proc (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=45428) from the SSO trinket (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34679).

Apparently, anything that requires a physical "hit" to proc will be useless, as the "immune" result from any physical swing against these mobs does not count as a hit.

Now, who was defending Blizzard again?

They can be extremely nasty as a rogue, I agree. The fire oil, as suggested by another poster, is but a meager help. They do have effect, but it's rather minimal- even though you can chain them. I just used Six Demon Bag on the shades, doesn't seem to help either. What I do want to mention is that, should you solo this as a rogue, it's smart to clear the room below the one containing these mobs first. Should the deadly poison you use NOT kill the shade, AND your Vanish is still on cooldown- jump in the water in this room. Shades will follow you, but they'll give up the pursuit after a while.

Solo'ing rogues. Have deadly poison on both weapons. Cheap shot followed by 3 rapid Shiv's followed by 1 Eviscerate at 5 combo points. Hopefully poison will tick it down to death after that. Worked most of the time for me.

I came back here to get the achievement on my warrior today and encountered this mob. If your an engineer, you can use bombs, rocket launcher, or lightning generators. The EZ throw grenades work for non-engineers, too. Obviously, this method is very time consuming..

On a side note, as a protection warrior at 80, if laid out carefully with stuns, I could kill these mobs before they had a chance to turn into shades. Having the rocket gloves/lightning generators as a backup (Which I ended up using several times) saved me though.

When I realised that these guys can't be killed with my warrior, I paniced, and used all item I had in my inventory, and tried all skill. Never thought that Iron boot flask going to save me once.

If you're a Fury or Arms warrior, kill everything in the room but the Occultists before resetting them. After that, build up some rage off of some other mobs and then round all of the Occultists up. Hit Recklessness, Whirlwind, and then go beat down Gandling.

here is what you do get deadly in off hand shiv them till they switch wait for deadly to tick and when there health is low enough use envenom. if you screw it up vanish and try again

They created a mob that is nearly immune to a few different classes in the game, and yes for that they do deserve criticism. If the immunity to physical damage were not infinite, it would be fine.

ROGUES ONLY

Mortemer above has got it exactly right. Only aim to take out one at a time. If you get the chance at two then that is a bonus. You can only get two when there is one left in one group and you move to one in one of the other groups.

Attack from stealth using only Shiv. Spam Shiv like crazy until they turn to Shades and then hit the Shades with Envenom just once.

I would also add that you don't use vanish if you get it wrong but simply run out of the room and jump over the balcony to the lower level and run into the room immediately below the room that the Shades are in. They will chase you so jump into the deep water and wait for about 10 seconds for the Shade/s to go back up to the room where it/they will take on human form again. Just take it from there and repeat. Worked for me like a charm.

I used my Commander's Badge to summon a Netherwing Ally. His breath weapon did the trick against the shades.

Druids: Thorns works too. Not like we don't have plenty of magic to kill them with, but, if you're here trying to figure out how they spontaneously died while you were rounding up the next mobs, that's why.

Having a lot of trouble with these guys as a 78 Prot Warrior, I found that the very small ~100-200 nature damage proc, "Electrical Discharge", from meleeing while under the effects of Iron Boot Flask will damage them through the Dark Shade effect.

As a rogue (level 80) soloing, I found it easiest to use Deadly Poison and use only auto attacks until the occultist is at about 40%, then mutilate once or eviscerate if you have combo points to one-shot. If you don't quite kill it with that and it turns into a shade, the deadly poison will still tick. (Though one time I found that it didn't. Most of the time it's still worked though. *shrug*)

I managed to clear all these mobs as a level 77 Arms warrior, I took me over an hour though, Constantly running down to the Vault of the Ravenian & hiding in the water to reset them, I realized that the trick is to kill them so quickly that they don't have time to change into shadow form and when i say quickly i mean within 3 or 4 seconds, You have to crit them on every hit, I used Mortal Strike, Overpower & Slam with a few crits on auto attack, I was doing on average 3k to 4k on every crit, Like is said it took me more than an hour but i got the achievment & thats all i care about, It just takes alot of patience.

Done easily with the following characters:

Warriors - Arms spec, wait for a Sudden Death Proc and mash them at about 60% health
Rogue - Deadly poison/Envenom
Hunter - Arcane Shot, Volley, Explosive Trap

Fresh 80 protection warrior.

Target an occultist, and white-damage them down to ~40-50%, then Shield Slam them. One shot, one kill, they don't have time to shift. If they do, just go to the next group and try on each occultist until you'te attempted on all in the room. THEN run down in the water and reset them or Shadowmeld and try again. I cleared the room in my second attempt.

I had 3xT9 (one day of farming HC's, you get groups immediately more or less). I still had mostly blues, and the Royal Crest of Lordaeron and my slams would crit at well above 5000 which is more than enough to kill them. If you have Shield Block available, pop it before slamming them, I've reached crits above 7400 with it, which would've been enough to one-shot them form 100% health. With the 4xT9 protection set bonus and 2/2 Shield Mastery the cooldown drops to 30 seconds.

I could just be completely clueless about how you're suppose to kill them, but as a 3k whgs rogue they stayed immunes for several minutes so I decided to vanish and try again, but many times in a row they stayed immune. Even after using Killing Spree or Cheap Shot and Killing Spree they just go immune. To kill these guys I had to put a dagger in my mainhand and Ambush them. So...For all you senseless rogues out there like myself, just one shot them with Ambush. =D

Have to agree with spidertactics... Cheep shot followed by shiv 2x or 3x which ever you can get before shade appears then envenom... drop them like flys

Brewmaiden from the Bitter Balebrew Charm will damage them with nature based attacks for those warriors having trouble killing them when physical immune. She throws beer that does about ~150 nature damage per throw. And if you are farming this for any particular reason, the Stratholme holy water is a great one too and does 500ish (can crit) aoe damage to them. The crates in undead strat with a medic red cross/plus sign on them are guaranteed to have the water. Theres 4 or so around the Baron's building plus all the other random crates around that can contain them. stacks in 50 and easy to get. 1 min cooldown, so just alt tab (the occultists cant kill you) between throws if you didnt get them low enough/kill them first time around.

Oh, and fiery enchants dont seem to work. I tried the WotLK fiery and it wont proc for fire damage on them in case you thought to spend the money.

it's called proper strategy, rather than just blindly bumbling into these packs you mark them up, put big threat on them then have magic users finish them off. Enough with the whining about this crap. Casters had to deal with elementals being completely immune to everything in their entire spec'd tree up until cata. And there were dozens more water, fire, arcane, earth/air elementals than these physical immune mobs... Not to mention a good number of *dragons* either immune or so highly resistant u needed pvp levels of spell pen to land anything on them *cough* azuregos *cough*
