Edit: this may just be a beta thing, but it looks like this is gonna be the required engy tool (e.g. Arclight Spanner) of cata. Now we need to make a better army knife that has on of these suckers on it. So you can defibrillate someone, or shoot them in the face with some bolts.

At some point, this ceased being a trinket; and instantly became awesome.
A neat burst attack; especially if you happen to be a healer and you don't have a surplus of such things. All it costs is a space in your massive titanium toolbox. Just 'skin' some bolts off some robots someplace.

Facts:

It is like a Saronite Bomb, you have to target where it's going to hit
It has a cast time of 0.5s
It triggers the global cooldown

It does a pretty good damage, but may not be something you put in your rotation for dps

At level 85 8500 damage will be negligible. The casting interrupt will be useful for melee classes in pvp against casters although a good caster is probably way out of range (the range of this thing is really pitiful). Probably not usable in rated BGs or Arena either. On top of that it requires ammo (obsdium bolts) to fire. That's right, Blizzard took ammo out of the game for hunters and gave it to engineers.

A couple more notes: Though this says it is a "gun", it is usable by paladins and probably other classes than normally can't use a gun. Though it did not say so until the item was made, as of live cata it does still require a handful of bolts to fire each time, which imo makes it pretty much not worth the while except as a skillup point.

This weapon levels your engineering occasionally when used.

I don't have any pictures to show you cause I'm a retard and dunno how to SS, i was using it against an ogre in nagrand while mining for adamantite. The reason i said occasionally is because i had previously used it on a demon in Hellfire Peninsula while mining fel iron and got no skill ups.

Even though the text says it uses several bolts it only uses one.

also tested this out AoE style it does hit multiple mobs.

It does not say it uses several bolts. It says "Handful of..."

That is the name of the reagent. If you have 20 bolts, you have 20 Handful of Obsidium Bolts. Which means you can fire this 20 times.

This also means for every four obsidum ore ( or every two bars ) you get between 2 to 4 shots with this depending how many handful of bolts you make randomly.

I am High-Powered Bolt Guns guy, and this is my bolt gun. She weighs 150 kilograms and fires custom 200 gold custom obsidium bolt cartridges at 10,000 bolts per minute. It cost 400,000 gold to to fire this weapon for 12 seconds. Hahaha! Oh my God! Who touched Sasha? What... WHO TOUCHED MY BOLT GUN? Some people think they can outsmart me... maybe, maybe... I have yet to meet one who can outsmart the Obsidium Bolt!

Made one for my lv66 450 engineer Fire mage (you need lv65 to reach 450 engineer)
Look like it receive the 25% Fire damage bonus from the Fire talent tree, it's now doing 8750 - 13k damage and I even got a 26k crit with it already :)

in lv60-69 bg it pretty much one shot everything except a few 68-69 with good gear, the only bad thing I found about it is that it's sometimes hard to hit a moving target with it, but that can be easily counter with a Sheep,Dragonbreath or Frostnova :)

I can already guess that another nerf is probably coming soon.

For fire mages this thing is awesome.

This is the new "bomb" of cataclysm. Sadly it is a 2m cd. Here is why its still awesome tho:

1. 2minute cd does not share CD with cobalt frag bomb! So, if you need to live thru a 5 sec sp silence, you can.
2. On my mage it can crit for 20k+
3. If you are fire spec this counts as fire dmg! Meaning a crit will proc ignite!
4. Interrupts casting in a what seems like 5 yard area
5. 1second cast time can be cast while running.
6. Does proc the Global Cooldown.

Not sure what the crit chance is. Perhaps someone with lots of gold could do some testing as currently obsidium bolts are about 5g each on my server.

One thing that really grabbed my attention here was the pve possibility with the interupt and my tankadin, I know the casting time makes it not ideal but the hammer of justice cd is a bummer. In a pinch it could be a life saver and will make having a stack of bolts in the bag worth the space.

Can you fire the gun while moving? If it's possible, it might be worth something in some PvE-situations as a melee, otherwise probably not.

So, quick observation here: The damage from this can be modified by spec... I was in my demonology spec and the tooltip said only 9,970 damage... switching to destruction changed it to 12,131 damage. I find it odd that a spec change would affect an engineering item...

i have noticed that after each use the dmg on the tool tip changes about 400ish, goes from 8900 to 9300, did not change specs or have any different buffs. i do believe there is a secret nerf in 65 bgs with it aswell since it most of the time hits for 7k crits for 10-12. poeple in that bracket most of the time have no resil aside from 2 pc boa. it is fully resisted 30% of the time. i may need larger test banks to get an accurate number.

its still a ton of fun to 1 shot people when theres a full moon out.

or take 2 friends with it and go to the first mini boss in AV and watch all the tanks/melee die if fired at the same time

This Seems to Scale with any +Fire Damage% buff or any Flat +Damage Buff% Like the Mage Fire Spec or Warrior's Berserker Stance.

Also it's pretty handy during the Cho'gall for Interrupting Conversion.

Wonderfull at my gnome mage, level 65 :-) I level mostly using dungeons and Alterac Vally PvP, and is very amusing to one-shot a pack of 1 fully geared lvl 69 Death Knight and Rogue.

Quite often manage to ice block them using my Water Elements Freeze, and then fire my Bolt gun. Highest crit I got was 15.6k.. and in the 65-69 PVP range, no one survives that.

For running players also have a on my gloves that can crit to 7k. Players that are full health usually barely survice but will make an easy kill afterwards.

You'll need one to craft Goblin Barbecue, Elementium Dragonling, De-Weaponized Mechanical Companion, Personal World Destroyer, Lure Master Tackle Box, and possibly others. However, you don't have to bind it if you don't want to. So long as you just want to use it as a tool, you can just keep it in your inventory. You will, of course, have to bind it if you want to actually shoot things with it. Just something to keep in mind if you think you may want to sell it on the AH later on.

Since nobody mentioned it yet, it does not share a cooldown with explosives. So for goblin engineers, Big Daddy and High-Powered Bolt Gun would equate to a good burst.

As long as you got the gold for it.

Also, if you want to see how it looks like, goblin shipbuilders are using it in Twilight Highlands.

The High-Powered Bolt Gun is absolutely incredible in the current Cataclysm raiding environment where sudden explosive burst damage is often mandatory. As an Assassination Rogue, my AoE damage builds up over time and ultimately bypasses the AoE damage cap (Empty Poison Vial even if applied by Fan of Knives), however, many boss fights with adds are situations where time is of the essence. In my experience, here are some places where the Bolt Gun truly shines;

-Blackwing Descent-
Magmaw
Magmaw, in our guild at least, is to the point where we don't even actually bother DPSing his adds down, due to the fact they die from our Warrior tank kiting them with Rend up the full time via . It is however, worthy of note that the Bolt Gun excels at putting serious hurt on the worms and shouldn't be ruled out if you and your raid are having issues with the Lava Parasites being alive. Currently, I'm only using the Bolt Gun when Magmaw is afflicted by Point of Vulnerability after being impaled on the spike. Out of all the boss fights, this is where some of the largest crits I've ever accomplished with the Bolt Gun stem from, and it really does make a difference when cycling other cooldowns for added DPS.

Maloriak
Maloriak is a relatively simple boss except for his final phase and his continual summoning of adds. As a Rogue, I often switch ahead of time to the adds and build up my Deadly Poison stacks on them roughly 5 seconds prior to his Green Phase. When the increased damage taken debuff goes active, I use the Bolt Gun on the clustered adds who are being tanked, and often see very rewarding crits and several bodies hitting the floor.

-The Bastion of Twilight-
Halfus Wyrmbreaker
Halfus Wyrmbreaker is a relatively simple boss that changes moderately every week as to his exact abilities, however the following information is roughly universal. We often tank Halfus and set two of the drakes free, (regardless of their exact type this applies) DPSing them close to one another and the boss so they can be splashed by AoE; this includes the Bolt Gun. We don't really bother with the Emerald Whelps if they are available, but the few times we have, the Bolt Gun helped cripple them and push them closer to their eventual death later on down the road due to DoTs.

Cho'gall
Cho'gall is, unsurprisingly, far from a push over thanks to two key and killer mechanics. The Corruption bar, and the Festering Blood of the Old God; the black slimes in this encounter are to be burned down by DPS, however, if they reach reach their target or melee other targets (should they be rooted) they rapidly apply Corruption to the player's bar. Usually on the fourth, some times third, Festering Blood, I'll use the Bolt Gun to deal a massive amount of AoE damage to the clumped up adds. The Frost Grenade works wonders here also, by rooting the adds and allowing more precise AoE to blanket them, not to mention stop them from moving toward the raid.

-Throne of the Four Winds-
Anshal
Anshal is another encounter where quick add death via AoE is mandatory, however there is one notable detail. When Anshal uses his Nurture to summon his adds, the tank should be quick to pick them up and gain their attention, DPS should begin, but not go full out on AoE DPS yet. A few moments later Anshal will drop his healing green circle on himself or the adds (Soothing Breeze), this almost always heals the adds to full. The tank continues to move, pulling the boss and the adds away from the circle where DPS then burns the adds; this is the time to use the Bolt Gun, as the adds are weakened usually and you're about to switch to Nezir's platform. Usually the Bolt Gun finishes the adds as the coup de grâce and you go about transitioning.

All in all, this is an awesome reward from Engineering and I believe I'll be making use of this throughout Cataclysm for a long time yet.

It's possible to get this trinket at level 65 as a gnome with the passive bonus to engineering.

With full pvp gear and an heirloom staff it's easily critting for 18-20k - one shotting most mobs in instances - and everyone in the 65-69 pvp bracket.

A bit OP, I must admit.

Love this gun from 65-69 bgs on my hunter in survival one shotted anything in aoe effect and with nitro boost to make a quick getaway since u have to get up close and since ive made my hunter into a 70 twink in bgs its still just as much fun cant one shot people as much anymore but a good healthy knockdown of 3/4 of their health is always nice

Might not be a bad idea to post your toons level/eng skill when mentioning the damage any more, it appears it may scale. The tooltip shows 7300 to 10951 at max level/skill. Still hitting for fire damage.

So this is a "gun" that works like a bomb-right click on it and you get the green targeting circle. No need to equip such as with a normal gun. And, unlike a normal gun, it needs obsidium bolts to use as "bullets." Even worse, it is "bind on use." You have to be a lvl 450 engineer or above to use it.

A very odd piece of gear for sure. It was hitting the mobs inside Drak'Tharon for 7-9k damage. I'm a lvl 85 DK with 483 eng skill.

BTW, since this thing works like a bomb, you can blast people of your own faction, shoot at fountains, etc., for fun or whatever.

Got discovered some bugs with this gun.. if you use it while in feral forms it is not working and remaining on your character's hands (after you exit from feral forms).. and spamming the use macro or item shortcut doesn't make it work... simply you have to relog or something.

if you are a feral druid I recommend you to use it afther when you shape shift to caster form, otherwise it stucks and cannotbe usable without reloading...

Just a heads-up on this item. Nerfed substantially (stealth nerf?) in the 70 twink bracket. Before the nerf you could one shot people, i have seen a 14k crit from this thing. Now its barely worth getting, however still better than nothing, especially for melee.

To anyone wondering about the nerfs:

They nerfed both this and Bid Daddy, assumingly so that the two items wouldn't be used to literally one shot people with less than 15k health.

That said, this still works as a ranged interrupt, but isn't quite so desirable, esp considering how expensive it is to fire. I recommend using Saronite and/or Cobalt Bombs if you have them. They are much cheaper than the cata bombs and do decent damage, atleast in twink brackets. That said, the Cobalt one also incapictates the target for 3s.

Cobalt - 3s incap, 5y radius
Saronite - 15y radius

Figures might be a bit off, but it gives you a general idea.

Hello, after reading the majority of the posts on this page, I still have a question or two as the information seems to jump around and the posts aren't sorted by patch etc.
Firstly, does this bolt gun still do damage? the wowhead info at the top of the page lists 0 damage and interrupts the target.
Secondly, can this still be fired on the move? I see it has a 1.5 second cast time, but is that a stationary cast time? or a mobile cast?

My shaman is currently 64 so I can't learn this yet, but I'm really hoping that it's still good for some laughs in 65-69 pvp as I plan on spending a bit of time in that bracket for chuckles.

please keep in mind this is an AOE attack(so grant on classes like hunters that don't have many aoe options) and to mix in to non-channeled aoe rotation, also very useful on certain mass caster packs that like to channel long spells while they summon hordes of allies..

I was looking for another ranged interrupt for my paladin tank, so I tested this on Shadowbourne Felcasters and Fel Seers in Shattrath on their own and in groups.

1. Both were interrupted, even at level 100.
2. Still works while moving.
3. Didn't seem to have a cast time, my cast bar did not display.
4. Didn't seem to share diminishing returns with Avenger's Shield or Hand of Reckoning - each looked to get their full 3s of silence immediately after bolting the mob.
5. Did trigger the GCD for normal abilities (i.e. NOT my abilities which are not on the GCD like Shield of the Righteous and Word of Glory)
6. Its 2m cooldown did start counting down immediately like a normal ability (i.e. doesn't wait until out of combat like potions/Mecha-Blast Rocket/Shieldtronic Shield)
7. Didn't seem to share cooldowns with any other engineering gadgets I have, though I don't use bombs to check.
8. Did about ~900 damage.
