Withers will shrink the longer you leave him out. So far I've seen 4 stages of it.

1st is when you summon him, he is pretty big for a mini-pet. About up to the jaw of my worgen in terms of height.
2nd he shrinks a little bit, isn't very noticable.
3rd he shrinks down to your knees
4th he shrinks to the size of normal mini-pets.

He will grow back up if you dismiss and recall him.

The horde version from what I hear is a wizard hat that works like the orb of deception.

He will also grow back when you drag him into water.

Without addons being usable in beta, it's extremely hard to describe what quest route to take to end up with the quest that gives you Withers as a pet. My recommendation is to hit up every NPC with a quest in Lor'danel and work your way around.

Don't get discouraged!

You will run around from various areas and even hit up a couple different quest hubs. If some of you recall the flight that took you to Moonwell and flew through a dancing troll village, you end up there on your quest journey. When you've reached that area then you know you're close to being done with the 30 or so quests. When you're finally back in Lor'danel to turn in, you'll see a couple more quests pop up. One of those will be Remembrance of Auberdine and voila! You have your shrinking treant.

EDIT: From my testing on a few characters, you cannot skip any of the quests that begin in Lor'danel. You pretty much need to pick up all you can, do them, come back and repeat. Keep going till you're back over near the now destroyed Auberdine, do the quests there, head back to Lor'danel, and you'll head up North to a set of quests in that area. Like I said, once you've hit that troll village and do the vehicle (SUPER FUN) quest on the back of a giant, you'll be close to finished. If nothing else, at least you get a good chunk of Darkshore Quests done. =)

The NPC was invisible for me, but I could see his name.

I opened up my keybindings, scrolled to the target section and bound "Interact with target" to a key.

I did a /tar apo to select him, and then press my newly bound key which brought up the vendor window.

The pet is BoP.

This pet is a withered treant who starts out quite large but shrinks over time while you have him at your side.

1 special feature of this pet is that when you take him into water you get an emote that says "withers absorbs the water, growing back to full size". The pet regrows to full size when this happens. Dismissing and resummoning also has the same effect.

Horde players can buy Withers for money (30silver) but alliance have to do the chain quest as mentioned on this page, also the wizard hat effect continues if you remove it, i got a female goblin!

Unique Features: This pet gradually grows smaller in size after being summoned and will regrow once it is brought to a source of water.

How to obtain it
Alliance: This pet can be obtained by completing the quest Remembrance of Auberdine. In order for this quest to be visible, players must first complete a series of chain quests in Darkshore. The quest hub for these quests can be found in Lor'Danel which is in northern Darkshore.

Horde: This pet can be purchased from Apothecary Furrows for 30 silver. Furrows can be found within a cave southeast of the Darkshore Alliance quest-hub Lor'Danel. If you are unable to locate him you may need to wait for him to respawn as the Alliance can kill him.

I would just like to point out that this pet is Bind on Pickup. I made the mistake of thinking otherwise, since you can purchase multiple Withers at once from the vendor as Horde. I thought that it'd be possible to make the run on my level 80 and pick up an extra for my alt and grab a few to throw on the auction house. Noooope!

Does anyone else find it a little peculiar that you can purchase mutliple Withers at once but physically only have use for one? Its not a big deal, but I did waste 1g20s. I'm not sure if this was a tiny slip up on Blizzard's part or not. It is most definitely a slip up on my reading comprehension, that's for sure. ;]

Has anyone else noticed that this pet seems to "get lost" more than the other ones? I'll bring him out and just be running along the ground and then all of a sudden he's gone. Today, I took him through the drain pipe in Zangarmarsh and he just decided to hang out in the middle of the pipe. I didn't notice until I was going back out. He didn't follow me, then disappeared.

Note: You HAVE to loot an item off of "Jor'kill" ...the item he has gives the quest for Withers.

I didn't see this mentioned and had to go back and kill him.

Yo guys. I was completely confused by this, couldn't find the quest giver and didn't realise he was phased until you open him up through other quests.

Found this and then it took me like an hour to do the quests. Should it take that long to do them? Oh I see that I did the kill 50 murlocs quest that you don't need. Argh!

As posted above Withers return to original size when exposed to water (or lava). But this is only the case when your character gets in deep enough to start swimming (Enters deep enough liquid to count as no longer walking/riding/etc.). This, unfortunately, means smaller pools and other shallow fonds of water like some fountains isnt enough to make him grow. That he is scripted to react to the "swimming", rather than the actual water, is probably also the reason he reacts to other liquids... like Lava, poisonous water, etc.

Funny tree when you think about it...Standing next to a shallow pool or stream wont help him, but submerge him in Lava or a diseasefilled hole of pus, and he will be a happy camper... :-)

Re-textured as of 4.0.6. Withers no longer has the undead "withered" look to him . He now looks just like the old Resto Druid tree form while his portrait icon maintains the "withered" look. Kinda disappointing if you ask me, can't think of a reason for the re-texture. Nontheless, still one of my favourite companions.

So, since patch 4.0.6 I've seen people walking around with Withers, but he's not.. withered? He looks like a normal trent. What's the deal with this?
I originally figured keeping him out alot and pretty much taking care of him would make him.. 'un-wither'.. but I just wanted to clarify?

No need for any quests if you are on horde side at least! Just go to Darkshore and find the waterfall around the Cliffspring Falls. 57,31 and behind one of them is a secret cave entrance. In the back of this cave you will find Apothecary Furrows which you can buy this little guy from for 30s :)

I just got this on my level 73 rogue horde firetree there is a vender in a cave in darkshore. It is at 56.8 - 31.2 the vender is (apothecary furrows) and he sells it for (50silver) hope this helps! Any1 can get this pet!

it seems they reduced withers size to that of a regular pet now rather than dwarven or gnome sized.

he'll still get smaller and smaller but it wont be the same as when he was extra large :\

I'm not sure when the change was made, but I just summoned Withers after patch 5.2, and he came out mini-sized, didn't grow in water, and didn't shrink. The water dialogue also didn't appear, despite going for a swim in the SW canals. :(

HORDE: The entrance to the cave is through the waterfall. There are 2 red Vile Grell out side on the rocks. The cave inside will have cages with Uncorrupted Thistle Bears. Walk the path & take your first left. The Apothecary Furrows will sell him. You can't place this pet in a cage or buy one for a friend.

Sadly it doesn't grow that big anymore.

The answer was:

I understand you had a question about Withers. Perhaps I can clarify that for you.

While Withers used to be quite big for a pet, please know his size was reduced a while back.

The water effect is still around, though Withers is the same size as other battle pets when you first summon him, slowly getting smaller. When he fully dives on bodies of water he will regrow to his originally size, though the difference is more subtle than it originally was.

I hope however this information helps and wish you best of luck in your adventures!
