2 accounts 1 neutral AH
Get a worthless gray on one of the sides, put it up for AH for the amount of money you wanna send from the other faction. On the other account, buy the item for the money. You'll lose about 20% of the money from the AH cut though.

Like the other posters mentioned, the use of at least two accounts plus the Neutral Auction House can make transferring gold across factions possible.
However, you do need to keep in mind these two things:
The first thing: The Neutral Auction House comes with 15% cut. If you plan on sending a whooping amount of gold to other faction at one time, expect to lose a significant sum of gold in the process.
The second thing: Blizzard does not support this transaction. It's perfectly legal to do it; however, if the deal goes south—in other words, if someone 'snipes' the transaction or you get ripped off by your business partner—the chances of Blizzard being able to intervene is 0%.
It might behoove you to contemplate those two things before you do this. Other than that, however, good luck.

Hmm.. didn't realize there was a cut on the neutral AH. That kinda sucks.
However, doing it in one chuck or in several smaller chunks won't make a difference. So don't bother wasting time trying to perform a bunch of smaller transactions.

I was just researching to see if there was a way to transfer gold from my alliance to my horde toon, and came across this thread. According to this, its possible using a neutral AH.
However, wowwiki says the following:
Characters on the same account cannot bid on items put up for auction on any Auction House by a different character on the same account, even if the characters are of different factions (Alliance or Horde) using a neutral Auction House.
So which is correct? Has anyone done this and can verify it works?

Hence the need for

I think they should let you transfer gold to your own characters on your own account. What's the logic behind not allowing it?

^ This. And there
are
people (probably gold-farmers) that camp the neutral AH scanning for low-cost items to snipe them, so I highly recommend not putting up anything valuable at significant markdown hoping to get it across cheaply.
If you want to be absolutely safe, you'll need real life money -- get a level 10 character, dump everything you want onto it, and then pay to faction transfer it.

Wait... With Mists. out can't you give money and other stuff to a pandaren and make the pandaren a Horde (or Alliance depending)?

I have never tried it, and someone will correct me... but if you can mail money between characters on the same account if they are the same faction, can you not also send mail to your opposite faction characters on the same account?

If you want to get around the AH cut, find an item that sells well on whatever side you need gold. Put it on AH for 1s and buy on the other side. You'll get around the cut and only deal with the same-faction cut. It's risky, but if you have 2 accounts or a friend to help, the item is only on the Ah for about a second before you buy it.
