That's why you keep the normal MD spell somewhere on the actionbars =P
Actually that's why I add a mouseover target to the beginning of mine:
#showtooltip
/cast
summary:
1. If you have a mouseover target that can be helped and isn't dead Misdirect to them
2. or if you have a focus that can be helped and isn't dead Misdirect to them
3. or if you have a pet that isn't dead Misdirect to them
4. otherwise use Misdirect as normal
In actual fact I don't use the focus part - but use an addon that I wrote (
mtarget
) that allows me to assign variables in macros with functionality hooked into the unit frames - so you can replace a variable e.g. $tank with the unitid of the tank once it is assigned to a player - much like the focus but you can coordinate these in a raid or have more than one focus essentially (e.g. you could have $mt and $ot if you wanted to fall through the offtank if the main tank dies). More discussion of this in this thread:

#showtooltip
/cast Misdirection; Misdirection
Just a note for would-be-macro-learners... this can actually be written a little bit cleaner as:
#showtooltip
/cast Misdirection
In general you should only ever need to put the spell you want to cast in the /cast once. But the [] work as OR conditionals - meaning that if either of them evaluates to true then cast the spell (and with the appropriate target).

I actually use a focus macro instead. Just focus on who/whatever you want to MD too. This prevents you from having to re-write macros all the time. It's very simple...
#Showtooltip Misdirection
/cast Misdirection
I have the same macro on my rogue for tricks too. Just be sure to keep an un-macroed version of MD on your hot bar though, just in case your focus dies and you need ot MD to someone/thing else.

This posted above is definitely the best format: /cast Misdirection
I have two MD macros and i just change them around based on what i need.
I raid with the same MT 90% of the time, so i usually leave one macro with his name as the target. My 2nd macro is either target=pet, target=focus, or even target=OTname depending on what i need.
It really isn't that hard to go into a macro and change one word. Of course if you are trying to MD somebody with dumb symbols in their name, you pretty have to use the target=focus macro.
