Level 60, basically you dont get 'good' until you have access to large amounts of spellpower, and you dont get gear with any noticable amount of spellpower until you get into outland. The same can be said for most casters.

I dont understand ur points, cous the same goes with other classe's they dont get powerfull until they get attack power or SP etc.
PvP in lvl 30 is alot of fun cous u will also see the real power of your polymoprh cous people dont have all those boring escapes which they are able to get out of poly. And counterspell is also a nice spell cous people havn't got all these instant cast so you will be able to silence people for 8 sec due too timing they casting time spells.
Polymoprh + CS is they key for a low lvl mage in PvP. That is my experience.

Melee classes, at lower levels, scale MUCH better than spellcasters.
As a spellcaster early on, the only upgrade to damage that you ever get is new spell ranks every few levels - whereas a melee class can improve damage through new ability ranks, new weapons, and strength/agility/attack power on gear.
If intellect worked the same as strength as far as giving attack power/spell power, casters would be much better early on - but right now heavy spellpower gear isnt available until the late 50's, so casters lag behind in damage capability and leveling efficiency until then.
So far, I've leveled a Deathknight to 80, druid to 71, paladin to 70, rogue to 66, shadowpriest to 64, and mage to 54, and can say with full confidence that the casters (shadowpriest/mage) leveled soooo much slower than the melee classes did. Having to drink, and having worse scaling, kills it =/

I was frost until 52 on my mage, and I just now (like, two days ago) started leveling the character again. When I started back up, I specced arcane. Personally, i've always liked the general concept/feel of arcane, but it was never efficient enough for leveling.
Since I started back up though, gained 3 levels now, and I've found arcane to be almost as efficient as my frost spec was - plus it's doing similar levels of damage (slightly more, I'd say) and has almost as much survivability. It's the perfect blend between fire's damage/burst, and frost's survivability/efficiency.
And... its only getting better in the patch =)

Around45 you start getting really good as a mage, specially if you are frost. I have my lvl 53 mage and i kick ass and hardly have to stop to drink, specially with brain freeze who gives free instant fireballs

Well when we talk PvP in low lvl as this thread is about, SP and AP isn't everything, a mage is a CC machine especially as frost so if ur able to kite the guy around SP if never an issue. I find mages very easy too lvl, I leveld all the way from 1-70 with fire specc even tho I find out now frost is easier. Mages is not the best pvp class, like frostfinger said if u have fun playing a mage why would u ever reroll another char. Go pick a hunter if u wanna own PvP without l2p.

Mages scale poorly, they always have. You're going to see issues until you get your core talents and start getting spellpower. Melee doesn't really suffer from this issue in a lot of cases because either gear scales well(or one/two pieces of gear) allow them to continue to scale well. The only other class that suffers the same problem is priests, and warlocks to a lesser extent.
To the poster above saying "mages get better once their owner l2p", allow me to say this: L2P is fine and grand(and more so at 80), but it's a cheap way to avoid scaling issues when you're leveling with no gear, and you can stroke your epeen at the top of the pile. So don't contribute to the frustration problems of people new to the class, and give people who need a hand, a hand.

i don't think the dk really counts.. you start at 55. you skip all the boring pre-bc crap and get right into OP gear for outland.. for the drood, what spec? and the pally also? were they caster, tanker, healer? they all make a difference.. other than that, you're right though..
i have an 80 dk, 80 mage, and 65 holy pally (which i leveled as ret until like 62-ish). My mage seemed like it took FOREVER to get to outlands, and soemtimes it was fun, sometimes it was boring.. instances were always a lot more fun for my mage because that was where mages truly shined.. even just slinging frostbolts around, you still out dps most classes around your level..
i had given up on my pally for a while, to be perfectly honest.. i made him with the intention of making him a healer, but then i realized my old computer wasn't very reliable in some of the content for needing split second reaction time like a healer might.. however, when patch 3 came out, and droves of ret pallys were coming out of the woodwork, i admit i picked him up again to try it out. patch 3 revitalized a lot of pallys for levelling, and i was a band wagoneer, i'll admit it.. i respeced holy cause i was sick of seeing "LF1M for ...... instance... need healz only!" and i figure, if i'm a healer, i'll always have a job.. and i wanna learn what i'm doing before i hit 80.. but i digress from the topic at hand.. lol
melee does scale tons better at lower levels than casters.. ask any rogue or ret pally.
