I've been leveling my mage, but recently at around level 22 I can't seem to kill anything my level any more. If I do, I'm usually at a quarter health and have to eat. From what I've picked up, this isn't what is supposed to happen. I'm frost, so I think this should be lessened more than usual. What am I doing wrong?

Can you link your spec and say more about your playstyle?
Well, now my talents reset so I'm specless (about to start this guy back up, but was remembering problems), but basicallly what I'd do was frostbolt spam untill they were in fireblast range, then AE them to death. I didn't like to use frost nova each pull because of the cooldown is too long for downtime in between mobs to level effectively.

Instead of AEing them to death, you should continue casting Frostbolt.

Isn't that bad with the casting knockbacks?

If they get too close to you, use frost nova and then continue casting Frostbolt. By the time they're that close, you've probably already nearly killed them.
And as for Arcane Explosion vs. Frostbolt, Frostbolt is always the better choice . Arcane Explosion eats your mana so extremely fast. Spamming Arcane Explosion requires you to be very close to melee range too, so that could also be part of your problem. That spam also results in more downtime because of an increase in the amount of mana you have to regen.

Frost doesn't come into it's own until around level 30 when you have shatter and other stuff.
Agreed
I went fire up until 40 as you kill faster and frost doesnt shine until later on. At 40 i went frost with ice barrier. This increases your survivability and theres no knockback. With frost in 3.0, there are many ways to keep a mob frozen. this coupled with shatter can quickly down most mobs. I'd go fire up until 40-50 then change to frost.

How is arcane? that seems like a fun leveling spec, but idk if it would work as well as fire or frost.

Spell damage almost always does not cause interruption from damage, the only spell I'm aware of that does is Arcane Missiles.
All spells cause interruption, not just Arcane Missiles :)
Arcane is for high levels, 60 up. Before that you have to use AM, which is like cutting yourself only other people do it for you.
It is possible to level with Arcane, and AM is not as bad as you make it for levelling. AM does more damage than Fireball or Frostbolt when levelling, the trick is to use it correctly. :)
But if you're going for efficiency, go fire or frost. Arcane levelling is for the hardcore. :D
