ways to get flagged:
1.enter horde territory
2.enter contested territory
3.enter a battleground
4.attack an enemy player
5.cast a buff or heal a friendly player who is flagged
6. (not sure about this one) Duel someone who is flagged for pvp.
7.bug
for you i think its either
5 or 7.
regards to #6, no you cannot flag dueling a flagged person. used to be it would flag you but that changed awhile back.

I don't play on a PvE server, but does going near the PvP objectives flag you? The 3 towers in Hellfire and 2 in Zangarmarsh.

If I remember right, it just says "You must be flagged to help capture this objective" and doesn't auto-flag you.

I've had an experience similar to #6.
I was flagged, (don't remember why, probably just trying be cool or something stupid like that) and I requested a dual with some dude of the other faction who was not flagged. He accepted and he won. While my character was doing the kneeling animation that the loosers do, he hit me! My health was like 1 because I had just lost a duel, so it was a 1 hit kill. Fortunately there was a friendly 70 arond that avenged me. : )
That was pre-bc. actually it was some patch a few months before BC that they made it where you can't flag dueling a flagged character.
