Having read through the new garrison additions it really comes across as though the ones with gold will get more of it and the ones without will have less. Hiring mercs? where does that get fun?
for once Id like to see an expansion that rewards what you do IN that expansion and not what you farmed four years ago.

It doesn't sound like you can just throw gold at a problem. There's probably a maximum of mercs you can have, and I doubt the cost will be very high. It's more of a "start something now, reap rewards later" system, similar to the farm: sure, level 90 players have access to four times as many plots as level 85 players, but they have to grind Tillers rep first.

Name examples please?
I can't recall one situation where anyone starts off at an advantage in an expansion other than perhaps purchasing power on the AH rather than farming their own mats. (Which as an ore, herb and leather farmer I absolutely love.)
It sounds to me like you have an issue with players who have gold in the game, but then on the flip side of the coin, if someone has farmed their asses off over previous expansions, then why shouldn't they benefit from that?

I don't know anyone who farmed so much gold years ago that it's carrying them through to today. With inflation, what would have been a sizable nest egg in BC could be spent on a piece of crafted gear in MoP. People who have a lot of gold have it because they are continually making gold, not because they have been around for years. As someone who does decently well at the AH, I can easily pull in as much money in a week now as I spent 2-3 months saving in Wrath for high ticket mounts. Next expac, I expect to find a way to make enough gold each week to make MoP look like a recession.
Making gold is about developing a skillset and a knowledge base. People who make gold generally have gotten good at soloing content that drops items like pets, recipes and BOE's that are in high demand and will sell well. They are familiar with the different classes and their gear to know what people are most in need of from their professions so that they can make items that will sell. They have a good eye for what an item will sell for when they have no frame of reference, or when someone sells far lower than they should. They know how to look in gaps in the AH and pick the ones that are easy to fill at a significant profit. Rewards that are gold based are rewards for ongoing use of these skills, and continually learning what is needed by the most current build of various classes every time they change things up.
At the end of wrath, I bought the Crimson Deathcharger for my hunter, because I didn't have any character who could do the legendary quest. The gold for that took 4-5 months of serious materials and gem farming. In MoP, I drop the same amount of gold every other month on the BMAH or a crafted mount without devoting nearly as much time to farming things to sell. If there are going to be things that need to be purchased for gold, they're either going to be reasonable enough that most people can afford them and they act as a balancing agent for inflation, or expensive on the scale of that expansion's economy, which will likely be much more affordable for people making gold in that economy than people who had some saved up.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

Really?
I know quite a few people who were approaching or hit goldcap back in Wrath/early Cata and just kept stockpiling it on their bank alts. Engineering mounts were the only thing noticeable gold sink to those kinds of people at the time and now the only noticeable gold sink in BMAH since most of those people have their own Engis to minimize the costs.

All the vendor mounts are gold sinks. Specially the Yak that's 108k. The JC Mounts are a good gold sink also as you need to make all 4 mounts 2 times to get all five mounts.
At best your looking at 350-400k gold for all the MoP mounts yes that's a pretty good gold sink but there are people that are on my server that have gold capped 2 or 3 toons.
I try not to keep less then 50k in my bank alt. and not is the time I'll start building up money to get ready for the next exp and the herbs for my scribe(s).
