Although this looked great on paper, it has totally stifled real discussion on the new expansion. Please consider this when doing something similar. Maybe have one prize thread, and then real discussion threads. Just a thought.

Agreed. It's a great idea, but as other contests have shown, people don't read the contest rules, they just post a random comment and think they'll have a shot at the prizes.
This in turn causes the thread to be flooded with all these random comments, making it impossible to have a proper discussion as the useful comments are lost in the seas of random useless one-liners.
Checking on the thread after an hour to see if anyone responded to your comment means wading through 10+ pages, something I, and most others, aren't going to bother with.
The idea behind the prizes was most likely to increase discussion, yet it's accomplished the exact opposite.

I'm well aware what the words "contest" or "prize" in a thread title do for the majority of the internet, just surprised Wowhead decided to go down that route in this scenario.

I am going to agree, that was a weird way to approach it but I do believe it was because they were all at blizzcon and too busy to arrange something more elaborate. I mean come on, they usually out do themselves all of the time. Something this simple was a great idea. Wowhead is amazing.
