Let's go through the dates of the last major content patches before an expansion, and I'm not talking about patches like 2.0, 3.0, etc which overhaul the game.
Patch 1.11 - 6/19/06
The Burning Crusade - 1/16/07
Patch 2.4 - 3/25/08
Wrath of the Lich King - 11/13/08
Patch 3.3 - 12/08/09
Cataclysm - 12/07/10
Patch 4.3 - 11/29/11
Mists of Pandaria - 9/25/12
Patch 5.4 - 9/9/13
Warlords of Draenor - ?
As we can see there is no consistency; we have 7 months, then 8 months, 12 months, and 10 months. With how competitive the MMO industry is and the push to deliver and the drop in subscriber base Blizzard is not going to lollygag with WoD, or should not, so it releases on their 10th anniversary. It would be nice if it coincided but it is still a product from a company that needs profits.
Just from WoW subscriptions Activision Blizzard has over $1 billion revenues and it is shrinking. Even with the release of 5.4 the subscription base still decreased. The CEO commented that the subscription base is cyclical but the drop during a content release is contradictory to that.
Yes, subscriptions will pick up when WoD is released but if it is far out into the future; so how does Blizzard retain the current subscribers till then when they acknowledge there is no new content until then? They can't, which is why WoD won't take over a year to be released.

The subscription base has decreased because it's a 10 year old game. WoW is still making money hand over fist, and will continue to be one of the highest grossing MMO's for a very long time.
Blizzard does not rush; they'll put out the content when they think it's ready and not a day before. Now if that's in 4 months, 6 months, or 12 months so be it. We'll get the expansion when we get the expansion and not a second before that,

Quite true, but it's still fun to speculate.

I prefer the speculation that starts with the Betas, and not right after Blizzcon.

I think the only logical release date would be, November 23, 2014. because that would be the 10th anniversary of world of warcraft. it would be slightly poetic
LOL, they would never do anything like that.. hold an expansion for something like that.
During the panel, they said that they never even held a game or expansion based on the release of other other games (blizz or others).
The other thing they said is when they were asked about a summer-fall release, they said ´before then we hope´.
My guess is they are shooting for March. that was their original date with the 9month expectations. I am guessing in April we will see the expansion.

I'm not the only one here but I'll voice it, I can't see myself playing 5.4 till Q3 2014. ESO is Q2 and I'll cancel my sub to pay ESO's until WoD release. By time ESO hits I'll have a complete sets of Grievous on my 90s and had my fill in SoO, so why would I stay?

And that's your right; still doesn't mean that it's gonna get released sooner.

I believe December (Christmas sales) 2015.
Sorry, but in my Opinion it will be much, much earlier than that. i assume in 2015 we can be looking forward to finding out what expansion comes after WoD, its nearly a 100% chance that it will be released in 2014.

Cataclysm was Announced on August 21 2009, and released December 7 2010. Now thats a very long wait (15 months) for an expansion that wasn't all that impressive. Warlords of Draenor looks extremely promising and as Adamsm said, it can take a series of months, as blizzard likes to say. Soon™
And this is not "other games" this is an expansion, so yes it may be predicated on certain release dates.(##RESPBREAK##)2060##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##Hi there. Just a reminder: when you have something new to add and no one else has yet said anything, please click 'Edit' and add it to your most recent post rather than making a new one. Thank you.

Wait a tic, we're talking apples and oranges here. The time of development for cataclysm had nothing to do with how much impressive it was or not (For me, it was awful). The reason it took nearly a year and a half is because of the massive scope of the expansion. Remember, they were remaking two INCREDIBLY LARGE continents (Larger than outland and northrend put together) from scratch to allow flight in them, as well as redoing well over 2000+ quests for the old world, as well as crafting 5 new zones for the high levels, along with the 1000+ quests for that as well.
That is one MASSIVE undertakement, and it shows. The earlier low lvl zones show an incredible degree of quality to them, with epic sweeping storylines, and good writing that keeps you off the edge of your seat, while the high level zones were either "meh" or were actually painful to wade through. Or had tons of plot holes, or cliffhangers that to this day remain unresolved, or left you wondering what the hell they had to do with anything.
Cataclysm's development time was because of the sheer size of the expansion and no other expansion before or since will EVER take that long, because they simply add a new continent that never has more than 10 new zones. Compared to cata that had to redo like 30+ zones, plus 5 new ones from scratch, and then well over 3000+ quests.

Hmm Ripjawz, i suppose your right but when WoD is released in 2014, i hope blizzard takes advantage of the new technology at hand. I've seen through the numerous blizzard posts that they have been working on character models. Now i'm not against having out of date graphics as long game play is superior but i think it would be a nice touch. But that would be touching on a different subject all together

I feel lost here. Can someone get me up to speed? Garrosh has been defeated, which is great...so, who's the new Warchief of the Horde (if there is one)?

....Um...did you miss all of the posts about the updated character models they unveiled at Blizzcon?

I prefer the speculation that starts with the Betas, and not right after Blizzcon.
You can always choose not to participate in speculation threads, and let others who do prefer speculation get on with it.

23 November, 2004. -
World of Warcraft
16 January, 2007. -
The Burning Crusade
:
784 days
or
2 years, 1 month, 24 days
excluding the end date
13 November, 2008. -
Wrath of the Lich King
:
667 days
or
1 year, 9 months, 28 days
excluding the end date
07 December, 2010. -
Cataclysm
:
754 days
or
2 years, 24 days
excluding the end date
25 September, 2012. -
Mists of Pandaria
:
658 days
or
1 year, 9 months, 18 days
excluding the end date
So, if we add the shortest time between the expansions (658 days) and the longest time (784 days), we get 2 dates:
15 July
and
18 November, 2014
. First date is the earliest we can expect
Warlords of Draenor
, and second is the latest.
Probably :P

@adamsm, No
Then may want to mosey on over to either the official forums or wowinsider and take a gander; think you'll be quite impressed.
