Questions about Shadow Priests

Hello all, I'm about to start WoW again after a two year hiatus, and just had two quick questions about priests.
1. I've heard some rumours about Shadow Priests having trouble soloing leveling content, and I was wondering whether they were baseless, or this was an actual issue.
2. Another scandalous rumour I've heard about Shadow Priests is that they lack any real single target DPS, especially compared to the dedicated DPS classes, or if this was just an issue that these were issues with individual players.
These questions were just my pondering into whether I should choose a Priest to play as when I come back, or to decide on another class. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

Welcome Back!
1.)
I've leveled my character as shadow and there is no problem with this at all. you can shield and renew while in shadow form, so your own health is not an issue. you will survive just as well as any other DPS class. (I have leveled a monk, mage, priest and druid to 90). But the new exp. has mobs that hit harder than what we had previously seen, so dont pull too much...
2.)
Shadow Priests are excellent on single target dps. we are gear dependent though, but you should be just fine. were not topping the lists as warlocks are but overall were not on the bottom either, and with our many ekstra heals for raids and as a solo player, you are useful and preform your dps.
It ultimatly depends on you, I love playing as a priest. And I am assuming you did once too, so try it out. A fair few new changes has occured lately so give it a day or two before you decide.
And to finish off, PVP utility is also a viable option this time. we can self heal without leaving shadow form and take a fair bit of damage as we dot up our targets.
Good luck!

Hi there and welcome back!
Once you get to Pandaria, there are gear vendors in a couple of locations. It's green 372 level and may make the difference in having an enjoyable leveling experience. I had been using heirlooms up until I got to Jade Forest and my gear was quite a bit lower than 372. It made a huge difference.

Thank you both for your answers, your answers both helped greatly, my friend just said that he didn't enjoy his priest much anymore, but I think it must just be him. :p
And in regards to playing a Priest before, I have but only to 50ish back in Cata, and I had a great deal of fun playing it, so I'm just glad to see that i'll be able to continue enjoying it in MoP.
Thanks again, to both of you :)

Spriest is still an awsome class, ok it dps might not be as good as other dps classes but your surivabilty is greater, just look at any solo videos and its dk's, locks & Spriests that seem to get past most things. without there heals they would be a trickier class to play but you got heals so there survivability is almost tank like.

I do continue to play my spriest as my main because I enjoy the class, not because we are particularly good. In fact, when it comes to charts the only reason I hold my own is how pitiful the skill level has become in pugs (I'm not in a raiding guild).
Noxxic has put together a
chart
indicating maximum and realistic dps throughout all dps classes. Spriests are always on the bottom and often in last place. At least according to their list, priests have the absolute worst dps, for every other class has at least one spec that par surpasses our abilities.
Spriests range from 70-80% of the maximum with few exceptions. That if you pull 150k dps, someone equally geared/skilled and at 100% will pull 187.5 - 214.2k dps. We are loosing 37.5 - 64.2k.
Defensive capabilities on all hybrid classes have recently been nerfed.
Shadowform
has lost it's long standing 15% damage reduction and simply increases our armor by 60% (no spell damage reduction and less physical damage reduction). Other hybrid classes suffered similar nerfs.
Blizzard could literally give us a flat 20% increase to damage and in most scenarios, we'd be average.

Sorry but Spriests kind of suck now. They have no real escape mechanism besides an easily countered fear and a dispersion that silences you. That's right, you as a caster get silenced if you use your ability, and you can still die during it. You will never live long enough to do any decent damage in pvp.
Outside of pvp your dps is completely subpar compared to other classes outside of maybe a balance druid, and even then you have to play 100 times better to get there. You have to put in more effort to even get not so far behind.
Soloing is ok, unless you plan on doing old content raids. There are many bosses out there that will mana drain you, or just straight up beat your ass no matter how geared or skilled you are due to mechanics you can't really handle well. Lady Vashj, Reliquary of Souls, and Viscidus instantly spring to mind. Sure you *can* beat them, but the amount of preparation, luck and gamey tactics involved to do so is nauseating when I compare it to what my druid or warrior can do, even with them having lesser item levels.
I would make the switch to Disc. They have an atonement passive now that heals you for 90% of the damage you do, and their dps is respectable enough to get you by.

Atonement
only heals you for 45% of the damage you deal. You receive a 50% nerf when used as self healing. Currently as disc I pull about 40-50% my dps as shadow (slightly lesser gear).
