be sure however, to keep them in an item set and put them on when returning quests. If it does still work, the bonus exp will help you grind.

you can also upgrade heirlooms from 1-80 too 1-85 at the vendors who sell them.
the cost to do this has become a lot lower now in 5.3 so prehaps might be worth checking today or tomorrow if you're from the EU. too get some upgraded.

ok so i just hit 81 on my rogue. a few of my BoAs only go up to 80. so does this mean that i no longer get the exp boost from those ones? or do i still get the boost and the stats will no longer increase?
You only get the bonus exp going TO the maximum level on the heirloom. In other words, those lvl 80 heirlooms did not give you an exp bonus going from 80 to 81.
You would have to go back and read about it. But basically those heirlooms were available in WOTLK, which capped at 80. There is no way they were going to allow us to use exp boosts for the beginning of Cata (to get to lvl 81). When we were in WOTLK, this question was asked a million times and they said no way. It is much the same way that when MOP launched, our lvl 85 heirlooms (hat and cape), did not give us an exp boost to get to lvl 86. You only get bonus exp going to the level on the heirloom, not at that level.
If you are questing, it might also be better to ditch the heirlooms even earlier than lvl 80. Usually the lvl 78 gear from Cata has huge amount of stats compared to the heirlooms (because they are based on the old expansion)... those extra stats may make questing fast enough to overcome the bonus exp on the heirlooms.

The heirloom gear stops giving experience bonuses as soon as you reach the maximum level of the heirloom.
It's just a small technical note, but the original level 80 heirlooms gave an experience bonus early in Cata that stopped at level 81, but they were adjusted to stop benefiting level 80 characters in patch 4.2 or earlier.
An easy way to test is to look at the experience reward from a quest. If you close the dialog and put on or remove your heirlooms and then re-open the dialog to look at the experience reward, it will change if the heirlooms are still granting an experience bonus. If you have a mix of heirlooms, you should test them one at a time.
