Battle Pets - How do YOU level them?

Hi,
Well, I know how you level, but what I want to know is about your team composition and how many pets you level at once.
So, do you just choose a solid 3 and then level them up? Or, do you switch them out with others, and raise an army of 5-10 as you level all of them up?
The advantage I can see of having 5-10 is that you'll always be able to plug in a good Pet against any wild one, no matter what it is.
The just doing 3 way, you could concentrate on Critters and Beasts (as they are most plentiful) and level up a Mechanical (against Beasts) and a Beast (against Critters), and one other utility to fill in.
So, what do YOU do? I have level 8 and 9 pets right now, and am looking to start getting them higher levels.
Cheers.

I level them as I do archaeology. So depending on where I am in Azeroth and the level of the pets, I'll switch them out as pets start to out level the wild ones where I am.

Since I am levelling my new characters by doing each zone before moving onto to the next level range, and I am capturing all the battlepets (rares only) in each zone as I go, I am levelling my battlepets as I go along as well.
I keep one lowbie on the team and get at least one shot in on that pet so it gets experience. Once the lowbie gains a few levels I switch it out with another. Prior to the last patch you could retreat from a pet battle without repercussions so I retreated a lot in my search for rare battlepets. Consequently my lowbies levelled very very slowly.
Now that there is a damage penalty for retreating from a battle, I will be forced to finish each one, and anticipate hundreds, nay thousands more battles to be fought while searching for rares. Consequently the lowbies will level faster now.

Thanks you two.
Any other expert Pet Battlers care to chime in?
Cheers.

Personally, I leveled the first 3 by killing wild pets whenever I happened to be in an area that had wild ones of a low enough level, and once I had those 3 to 25, I started using them to power level other pets by fighting tamers.
Level lowbie to 5 on Stormwind Rats so they can take a hit and/or and survive a DoT, grab tamer daily quest, get one hit with the lowbie pet, swap it out for one of the 25s, kill the tamer's pets, profit.
When I'm hunting for rares, I grab one pet that's low enough to still gain experience in that area and keep 25s in the team as backup.

Doing the battle pet dailies gets you a good amount of xp.If you've got a character in pandaria and 2 level 25 pets, you can gain 5-6 levels with a low level pet in the team. You just have to make sure it does at least one action and survives the fight.

If you have blue pets (some quest rewards, achievement pets, rare wild pets) you can "leap frog" wild pet levels.
If you have a level 10 trio, depending on family/type, you could conceivably succeed against a gray/white group of 12 or 13 pets, giving you a 13, which you can then use against a 15, etc, until you garner yourself a few 20+ pets.
Then you can use those 20s pets to power level the lowbie pets (especially if the highest are actually 25).
(A guildmate did this successfully with just a few achievement and reward pets.)
I also level my pets to 4-5 with a few battles in Stormwind (less reward now that pet battles under level 5 won't result in as many lesser charms) then take them to various trainers or babysit them with a beast to the critter mills in Valley of Four Winds.

Thanks all.Note that I'm only level 53 right now, and main pets are 9, 9, 8, but thanks for all the advice.
And, the other thing.I really wish Pet Battles gave Guild XP. Every time I go to do a Pet Battle, I think I should be doing some quests instead, because I'm leveling up a personal guild. That's probably why my pets aren't higher levels already.
Cheers.

Like others have said, focus on two or three Rare pets first. I went with Cenarion Hatchling, Clockwork Gnome, and Disgusting Oozeling. (Looking back on it, wish I had started with a Beast to more quickly shred through Critters.)
I went around farming wild pets that would have a disadvantage against whichever pet I was leveling. The hardest part was when I hit a wall around level 17; I was just tired of grinding. What helped was remembering that pet levels only go to 25 and I was sooo close, ha.

I've gone a completely different way :) I *love* pet battles. I am working through all zones grabbing as many pets as I can, using my high level guys to solo the older raids and dungeons to pick the dungeons drops too. I'm currently on 240 unique pets (all wilds are blue quality speed breed except for Anodized Bear Cub which I only have a green so far... might use a stone on him, and many of my purchased/ quested greens are now stoned up to blues also), and I'm levelling up every single one of them as I go. I finished out level 17 a couple of days ago, so I can tell you I have done a *lot* of fights.
Since my concern is on volume, I tend to burn through pets fairly rapidly - in the long run it doesn't matter which of them gets xp, so long as at least one of them does. I fight anything and everything I see and just work through the pets in alphabetical order. I switch out a pet when it is killed or makes a level, and replace it with the next in line. This is good because it teaches you techniques to use when you have a weak team (e.g. your lineup is 3 critters against 3 beasts), so you can often prevail in a pvp pet battle that you might otherwise have lost.
As for heals, I tend not to use them. with 240 pets that's a lot to go through. I have currently 5 alts I'm levelling with pet battle xp (my leatherworker and blacksmith guys panicking at all the top end gear they will have to make when they arrive :) and I only hit the heal when a character has levelled and I'm moving to another alt, or if I have a total party wipe.
I know my method isn't for everyone, but it gets me through the day :)
My favourite pet species are snail (acidic attack = awesome and the submerge is great for avoiding a bit hit attack), crab (once you get shell shield and healing up, not much can do sufficient DPS to take you out), spiders (brittle webbing and their heal is a strong combo for survivability), and I like mechanicals because their racial power is all kinds of handy.
I am frequently disappointed by the survivability of draconic pets - I think I just need better strategy with them. And rabbits are all kinds of a pain to level - I think they are made of paper with the enemy nasties having claws of chainsaws. Also yet to find a way to play scorpions as dangerously as they are played by the computer.
