Hello all, first time making a thread so be gentle.
After struggling with the fight like most peeps, I started reading up on many different forums and posts, and I've see many great tips nd tricks, though not all in the same guide, so I'd thought to bunch em together.
And I feel this is the easiest way of getting him down, since u control a great deal of the fight
Spec will be destruction with the known glyphs (enslave demon especially)
talents; soul leech, shadowfury, sacri pact, unbound will, grim of sacrifice and kiljaeden)
Before I begin, I suggest u try the fight a few times (if u haven't done this), not meant for killing boss, but for how to survive and see mechanics and phases.
Shall we?
-bring purification potions
-if u're standing before his portal, then to ur left and to ur right u're gateway ports should be, as close together to another as u can set em. (this is meant for imps not scattering)
-to the left and right of his portal there r clefts behind the pillars, do NOT set ur teleport pad in the cleft, but infront of the cleft (in the same line as ur gateway is), so that u can instantly teleport there and set ur pet to move there. I suggest u put it there after u clicked his portal, so it will be there when second felhunters come)
-set focus frame on Kanrethad's tag
-use dbm, to know when u can prepot.
and we're off!
-nuke kanrethad, use trinket+DS (keep 1ember)
-pitlord appears==>shadowfury it, enslave demon, while enslaving target Kanrethad ==>use chaos bolt+pitlord's charge(double damage)==>hop in ur gateway
-ur gateway will make sure u're agro shifts to pitlord and u'll use it as many times as u can, as soon as cd's off, hop in it (this way u won't be bothered with 90% of his debuffs and especially 100% chaos bolts, u can even postpone gettin the curse of ultimate doom for a few hops, my record was 4 hops) The few debuffs u get u'll remove em with singe magic
-keeps dpsing and hopping, keep 1 ember.
-he'll use cataclysm, so u will first start casting chaos bolt and then press pitlord's charge, try to do this everytime, it's a a double chaos bolt so to speak
-after cata position hop in ur gateway a last time, use singe magic if needed.
-imps==> use rain of fire, and aoeversion of conflagrate, and then the aoe version of incinerate, while doin this, u have time to call in ur pitlord's breathe attack on the imps, 1more rain of fire and incinerate should do the job make sure to stand close to where they spawn, cos if u're moving they'll scatter, making it waay harder to kill em fast)
-get in ur gateway asap, so the pitlord gets the chaos bolt.
-keep hopping and dps'ing (keep 2embers).
-he'll use cataclysm, so u will first start casting chaos bolt and then press pitlord's charge.
-right after cataclysm, get to ur teleport asap, so u can see the cleft, order ur pitlord to stay there(in the cleft), use your unbound will to remove everything, and ur pitlords heal to heal that damage, and use soulshatter, run back to ur gateway (make sure to move away from the cleft or they'll still devour ur magic).
also important, do not attack K after u used soulshatter, it's a dps loss, but that's why we have a purification potion on us right?.
-fellhounds==> if the above is correctly done, u'll have 1ember, no debuffs (except doom), no aggro from K (cos he's gettin cozy with the pitlord in the cleft), and no worries bout devour magic==>if u can't kill em now, turn back and get better gear. They will go for K initially, but u have plenty of time to agro em.
-after the hounds r dead, dps and hop like u're used to by now (keep 1ember)
-he'll use cataclysm, so u will first start casting chaos bolt and then press pitlord's charge.
-when K starts summoning a doomguard, dismiss u're pitlord. Why u ask? Cos else u'r enslave magic will automatically wear off at second felhunters phase, causing peeps to say they where los'ing and they still devoured... forums r filled with that fyi, I chose to do this at this point of the fight because it's the only 'calm' phase.
-so enslave is refreshed (dismiss, shawowfury, enslave demon), then attack the newly spawned doomguard with his normal attacks and breathe, so he gets agro, then set ur pet on K, while u use your gateway into safety.
-then keep dps'ing and hopping.
-the rest of the fight is repeating the previous, and if u make it past the second fellhunter phase, u're close to victory, so use ur purification potion
-only difference is when the second doomguard comes, the way I did, was mainly focus on what I said earlier, and ignore 1 doomguard, till u hopped in ur gateway first time after he spawns, then attack him with ur pet. (btw make sure u re enslave this phase again)
-keep hopping and dps'in, repeat all tacs, till u get boss to 20%, then u'll love those imps,
put a rain of fire and a immolate on them, and keep spamming shadowburn, shadowburn, shadowburn, u have infinite embers due to rain of fire, so u can selfheal true ember tap, pitlords heal, but with doing so much dps spamming shadowburn, u'll absorb a great deal of damage trough soul leech.
I'm hoping some peeps will find this tread helpfull,
I tried many different tactics too, with absorbing chaos bolts and such, but doing it this way, will make u controll the fight, and take away lot's of the chaos involved here, there still is a factor of luck involved with the debuffs u get at what times, but with a bit of luck this should be the easiest way imho.

My way was a tad different and by a tad I mean a lot different. I did it in only honor gear and fully reforged and gemmed for pvp so not even hit capped. The method I came up with I feel can be used in blues and be successful. Anyway...
So I used destro of course and used pretty much the same talents except I used mannoroth's instead for the last tier.
My setup is quite different. I don't use the gateway to diminish threat; I use it to get back into the fight. Looking at the portal, I place my gateway from the close to middle of the room to behind the pillar on the right. Also behind that pillar I put my port.
I start off just doing a basic rotation to build embers and you should have 3 by the time that the pit lord is summoned. Shadowfury and enslave the pit lord as soon as he is summoned and set him to passive to make sure he doesn't attack again later when you don't want him to. Pop your offensives and keep 2 embers for when he casts curse of ultimate doom, then start a chaos bolt and charge halfway through the cast so you can lob 2 chaos bolts and have both deal double damage.
He will cast chaos bolt soon after the charge, so use your port to line of sight it and once you are sure it's done then gateway back in. I do that for every chaos bolt and that is especially helpful for lower geared players doing this since you still need to beat the boss before the pit lord dies, which if you have purification potion, that is your real time limit.
The first cataclysm will not finish. The cast will stop almost immediately after it starts, so don't bother with the charge on him. Just free cast at him and take the breath from the pit lord to keep the dots at bay.
For the imps, follow your pit lord to Kanrethad and stand almost underneath him at the base of his tail. Use rain of fire all over imps; do not use fire and brimstone, there is no need. Just spam chaos bolt into kanrethad with all the embers you are generating. Once he finishes the cast, use charge and breath while still just nuking kanrethad. The breath alone will kill the imps because the double damage affects the imps. If they aren't all dead then they are still good ember fodder.
Port the chaos bolt.
Charge the cataclysm and keep 2 embers.
Now the Felhunters are always the biggest pain in the fight, but practice with this tactic makes them pretty easy. Move your pit lord to the left of the portal and you move to the right of it. No need to Line of sight your pit lord from the felhunters. Keep a constant rain of fire over the portal to auto agro them to you. Havoc the first one and target the second as they spawn. Once the third spawns, pop your offensives and start a chaos bolt. Charge the felhunters with your pit lord and your chaos bolt will or very nearly instantly kill the felhunters which is what your extra ember is for. Nuke the third and back to the boss.
Chaos bolt and cataclysm happen yada yada.
I do what Goldwodka does and re-enslave the pit lord during the doomguard summon. When the doomguard is summoned, get it close to Kanrethad and charge and breath while just fighting Kanrethad so now your pit lord has agro on the doomguard for now.
From here, you just repeat until after the second doomguard summon. I do re-enslave again during the summon and charge and breath all 3 (including Kanrethad) and soulshatter so they all focus pit lord.
After that second doomguard, all he will do is summon imps, which at this point you are pretty much home free. Pop your purification potion, breath off your dots every now and then, and keep track of chaos bolts and cataclysms. Other than that, just rain of fire all the imps and continue to lob chaos bolts into his face popping your offensives whenever you want, and of course use shadowburn below 20% and you will win.
This strat took me 57 deaths to perfect but once I did, it became a very fluid fight where you counter every part of the encounter with its own mechanics. Again, this was done in 475 ilvl and I even gave this tactic to a friend who was able to complete it in nothing but blues.
Good luck and I hope one of our strats will help.

The breath damages you but it dispels magic effects on you. Let it hit you just long enough to get the debuffs off and get out of it, so you don't take unnecessary damage.

I like the 2nd strat for Felhunters, as you don't need for your Pitlord to be that "far" away, as mentioned by Aharvey8647. You need to have it close enough to charge when Kath starts either Cataclysm or when you need to charge all 3 Felhunters. Left of the big portal works fine and position yourself to the right (as mentioned) and it works perfectly. Rinse and repeat... =)
