Okay so i started playing in Cataclysm and my first toon to 85 was a shaman. i got boa and made a preist, i loved being discipline healer. I had quit for a couple months when gw2 came out and came back a little bit ago. I started raiding, got into ToT and started getting yelled at for doing no dmg. i was like 'but im a healer, i heal, not do dmg' and they kicked me. I am extremely confused on why i was kicked. Please help.

You must be specced holy.....discipline priests heal through "atonement" spec. This means they do damage to mobs and it heals everyone of your group for a certain amount of the damage dealt.
Explain to your group that you are specced holy and that you heal them directly with your spells and not through damage to the mobs.
Edit : Ok you state that you are discipline = my bad....you should read up about the "atonement" spec.

The answer is implied in bradoliaks post;
Discipline priests have a (silly) good amount of healing from damage done with atonement, penance and smite (iirc those are the three spells - haven't played disc myself) - so like tanks do a good amount of dps these days, disc priests are also expected to contribute damage done - whether that expectation is a good thing, or if its the optimal thing, I won't speculate in (I have no basis for such speculation), but it is the general expectation from players these days.
(Also, apprently everyone must want to do MOAR DEEPS!)

Atonement has been part of a Disc Priest's arsenal for quite a while now and to be honest, I find it somewhat amazing you're not making use of that. I'm not saying your less effective as a healer for it, but it does copy 100% of the damage of your Penance, Smite and Holy Fire as healing... I can see how people would expect a Disc Priest to contribute in damage.

I am shocked that you would get this far in the game and not know about the Discipline playstyle.
Damage = healing is pretty much the baseline of our spec.
Atonement is such an amazing tool that once I rolled Disc I started disliking every other heal toon I had ever played. I am currently rocking 40 - 60k DPS and not sweating through keeping everyone topped up.
There are some great guides out there, read up on it; then queue back up and enjoy the wonders of Atonement!
Also, just an observation : This is part of why the priest community is kind of awesome.
In any other class thread when someone asks what seems like an obvious spec question, they're nuked to the ground by angry 1337ists.
Instead, the OP remarks on a significant spec oversight, and we all chime in with "Oh, didn't you know? Well, here's your answer, and here's some info on the rotation and advice on spell usage..." :D
Good on you, guys.

I myself (who have played Priest since Vanilla) found out about atonement 2 months after I started gaming again. Started in mid September I think. It really changed my feeling for my disc priest and I love it again. Rocking with 50k dps and dishing out 80k hps was really awesome. Then I feelt that atonement was boring and wanted to try Holy.
3 weeks ago when I scrolled in my spellbook I noticed a spell I did'nt use and I have'nt put out in my bars... "ARCHANGEL" ... and BAM I'm back and healing better than ever in disc.
So my tip for new Disc healers is that don't forget Archangel for god sake. It will boost your healing alot. Even more if u have 2 parts of Tier16 (+10%crit when Archangel is active). Don't be a noob like me, pay attention to your spells! :)

Disc feels more like a support healer for a raid helping a Holy Priest heal since direct healing has devoured my mana and it feels like Atonement is very limited. But maybe I am missing something and need to go through some training to make better use of my abilities.

I feel you there. Especially since it's been two xpacs since I've played. But I'm starting to get a feel for healing again.
I was too hung up on doing damage and my dps rotation that I forgot about how I used to cast conservatively back as a healer. So now I don't worry as much about my damage and hold back on casting when it isn't needed (in small dungeon settings).
In raids, thanks to Divine Insight, I mostly try to keep PW:Shield up on the tanks, since you get the mana cost for it back when it breaks or expires, and dish out slow dps when the healing is needed.
But dammit, I need more Spirit gear.

I think you might say that Disc takes a little extra thinking on how to use, since its bubble shielding for damage mitigation is what describes being a Disc Priest.
Always keep up PW: Shield, use Penance on your tank to keep up Divine Aegis, and make use of Atonement.
Ranged DPS might be a thorn in the side if they stand out of range of Atonement though.
