So i finally came back to my shaman when MoP was released and noticed my totem bar was gone, i figured i just dis-abled it in bartender, so i went in, nope, it was enabled. I googled about it. Aparently blizz thought it was a wonderful idea to take away the totem bar. What am i supposed to do in PvP? going through the list of totems to find the one i want then clicking it while paying attention to my health and others around me? WTF. why cant we jsut press 1 button and summon the totems we need. this is bull%^&*. you ruined shaman for me blizz, great job, now i get to re-roll.

You can still pull individual totems out and place them on your bar. You're also able to macro them by name and you can still keybind them.

I never use the dropdown icons. I always give each individual spell its own actionbar slot/keybind.

Totems are way more situational now and none of them last longer than 1 minute and the only 2 that do are the fire totems. Start thinking of totems as normal spells/cds.
That's part of the issue. Most people that liked totems liked them because they were NOT normal spells.
Likewise, for me, getting used to the new CD totems wasn't a great experience. I've been leveling my 85 shaman alt that was shelved after DS got boring. He's 88 now and I still find myself completely forgetting to pop certain totems.

The main totems used while leveling that I found quite useful are Searing/Magma (Fire), Stone Bulwark (Earth), Healing Stream (Water).
Air totems are more situational. If I happened to have bit off more than I could chew, I'd drop Capacitor to stun, or Grounding if there's a caster about.
As elemental specifically, I'd alternate my Earth totems between Stone Bulwark and Earthgrab. Once my shield dies out, drop the other and gain some distance and continue my onslaught.
That's pretty much all I've gone about it. I've leveled as both elemental and enhancement with two separate characters and the above is all I've really had to manage regarding totems. Once you get the hang of the new system, you'll realize it isn't all that hard to keep up with, especially if you place your most used totem spells at easily accessible keybind/actionbar slots. For instance, I too was overwhelmed by the amount of spells and declining actionbar real-estate when I started up again, and Capacitor totem found itself on a non-keybound slot. After some time, I moved it up to my 8 key and now it gets used on almost every trash pull and I wonder how I ever went so long without it.
Edit to add: I think another thing that helped me realize how fun having totems as more utility now, is tackling the rares of Pandaria. If you happen to find one, take a look at your entire spell kit before engaging and you'll get a better idea of how each totem spell can help prolong your survival and/or increase your damage output. You'll also get a better idea of how each totem spell can be used back-to-back to achieve your goal (like how I mentioned above with Stone Bulwark & Earthgrab and with underestimating Capacitor).
It wasn't until I started fighting rares on Pandaria did I realize what an awesome set of abilities we currently have and how helpful they all can be if utilized efficiently.
