I only started a few weeks ago. Here was what I did, I found it enjoyable.
I picked ten pets that I liked ( one of each species) that were rares. I then created 10 teams using those ten pets ( using an add-on called pet battle teams). I named each team based on who it is against. For instance, if you come across a critter in the wild, there is a species who´se attacks are strong against critters, and another who critter has weak attacks against.. and then throw a third pet on that team who is neutral. So on that team, you will have two pets that are OP against that opponent and another pet.. Each of your pets should end up on 3 teams total.
I then just went to each zone, lowest levels first and captured one of each pet from every zone. Your critter and beast team will get slightly ahead because there are so many critter and beasts in the wild, but nothing really prevents you from using a different team. My goal was mainly to capture one of every pet, but you can easily keep 10 pets leveled up at the same pace as you are going through zones.
If you have an alt who is 90, this is a great way to earn lesser charms without doing dailies on your alt.

Actually, if you have alts in the low and middle experience ranges, you should use your pets as you travel about mining, skinning, herbing, archaeology, questing and exploring. If you do not yet have all the explorer achievements, this is a great time to go for them.
Every place you fly with your fastest mount, keep an eye out for pets you either do not have, or have too few. Snag up a pet or two in each zone, three maybe. Some zones have rare pets that you might be lucky to find. You gain achievements for total numbers of unique pets, for numbers of battles, numbers of PVP pet battles, numbers of PVP pet battles in a row, numbers of rare pets and types of pets.
If you do pet battles as something extra to break the monotony of doing other things, something to ADD VARIETY to other activities, you will find less drudgery to your farming chores, your archaeology leveling AND your pet leveling.
If you do a little at a time, changing pets on different toons, in different zones, possibly even on different servers and on different factions . . . I find it highly unlikely that most players will find that boring. Only dedicated raiders or PVP'ers who are "allergic" to non-instanced areas, even while waiting for 90 minutes in a queue, might have that problem.
