1. You can email/call Blizzard and they can remove the authenticator... I'm getting a "we'll be back soon" message when I try to log into my account, so I can't find the faq link, but in the Authenticator FAQ there's a section about "What if I lose my authenticator" which should have all the info you need.
2. Benefits to keeping your account? Your characters, gold, achieves, gear, etc etc will all be there. Plus you won't have to rebuy the Battlechest. If you want to "start over" then just make a new character on a new server, it'll be a fresh start without having to rebuy the game. Everything is going to be different now whether you start a new account or use your old one, they'll both be the same game.
3. As far as I know, Blizzard doesn't delete characters if they've just been inactive for a while. So the only way the stuff would be gone is if you were hacked in that time and someone else was using your account. So barring a hack, then all your stuff should be where you left it.

Indeed, and here's the direct links to the remove authenticator form. :)
Remove Lost or Broken Authenticator (Europe)
Remove Lost or Broken Authenticator (US)
Overall, the information provided by BigH is pretty much spot on. :)
