I've never really understood how to go about making the most of transmogrification as although there are guides out there that talk about this tier or that tier I could instead do with some basic advice on the principles.
For example - how would I go about looking for a set that I like the look of? I can't see a preview option in-game so do I need to check items here on WoWHead to see what stuff looks like? Regarding shopping for items; the other day I came across
Rona Greenteeth and I see
Last Year's Mutton for sale. Is this a transmog item in the sense that it has no use other than to put my existing mace's stats onto it? Is the idea that I can transmog my weapons stats onto these and run around with a pair of drumsticks?
Similarly, at Darkmoon Faire
Gelvas Grimegate has for sale
Darkmoon Hammer. As an enhancement shaman I use slow maces is the idea that I stick my current weapon's stats onto this and gain a dps increase for slower weapon (speed 3.3 compared to 2.6)? Or is it purely a cosmetic process?
I see
Barum selling replica gear. Is the idea that we choose a nice set, then transmog our gears stats onto those pieces? Crucially - is our original gear destroyed in the process?
Cheers for any help.

Personally I would suggest you to use the addon
Mogit. It's pretty straightforward. A new window pops up, you can select what kind of item you're looking for (plate helm, plate shoulder, weapon 1h, 2h, etc), and it will create a list with almost all items, as well as a preview of each item. So you're basically just scrolling down the window until you see an item that you like.

The original gear is
not destroyed in the process. You basically transfer the look of the item you want to transmog into, onto your current equipped item.
Transmogrification is purely cosmetic and the stats of the items you transmog will not be transferred, just the look.
