Hi,
Tomorrow is the day that Activision reports quarterly earnings, and we find out the number of WoW subscribers.
How has CRZ, and Dailies, and other issues with the game affected the number of subs?
Has the bump from MoP been maintained? Has the game attracted more subs with advertising and the announcement of a Movie?
Last quarter they just said 'more than 10M'.
What will it be this quarter?
From what I've seen on the forums and everything I can tell, there will be a dip. But who knows how much. I'm guessing it will be about 8.5M.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers.

I admit to great curiousity as well, though if numbers had dipped I would have expected to see Blizzard store sales on the Battlechest, Cata and MoP on the launcher when I logged in yesterday. In fact I'm eagerly anticipating a sale as I need another license.

I can't imagine that 8.5M would be seen as anything but a disaster. A 15% subscription dip over one quarter would have ATVI in full ZOMG-RUN-HIDE mode. As an ATVI shareholder, I sincerely hope that isn't the case.
Yes. I'm predicting a disaster and them immediately doing away with CRZ.
One can dream, can't one? :)
Cheers.

I think it's hard to judge numbers by the vocal minority on the internet. I think that the vast majority of players- especially new players- don't use the forums. Some people will have anecdotes about multiple people leaving because of CRZ, or because Pandas are for kids, or what have you. Others (as is the case with me) have gotten quite a few guildies back that I lost in Cata, and only know of 1-2 people who have quit since MoP came out. Also, the major argument I have heard about the "Kung Fu Panda" expansion is that they're trying to appeal to kids and new players who like cutsey games, and while it might not sit well with people who don't like those things, I would imagine that there are a number of new players who have come on board as a result.
We'll see the hard numbers tomorrow, but I don't think anyone can speculate accurately based on the forums or their own personal experience.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

Well, consider 8.5M a pessimistic estimate then. What's your more optimistic estimate?
Cheers.

If last quarter was "more than 10M," and if I take into account many people just got the game for the holidays, or had a holiday break from college that they were bored during, etc? Lets say still more than 10M, but maybe not more than 11M.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

Until yesterday I would have said 300 K but a Blizzard ad I saw recently makes me wonder if it might not be closer to 600 K. The only way you get down to 8.5 million is if China has cratered and China doesn't really matter since they pay so much less.

Is there any way to prove that CRZ has influenced a majority of players to make a buying decision one way or the other?
I have noticed people who dislike CRZ tend to assume everyone shares their opinion and can't fathom why someone would be supportive of or even ambivalent towards CRZ. "Everyone hates CRZ -- it's a massive failure! OMG agree with me!" There's no shortage of emotion from those compelled to share their point of view. But there is a lack of data here.
All that matters to Blizzard is the answer to this question: Is CRZ driving more subs away than it's keeping in or attracting to the game?
Well, two locked blizzard threads, and 19 capped feedback threads on the main forums indicate it's slightly more than a normal annoyance with the game. You'll also notice a lot of the complainers in those threads aren't the same as those in earlier threads, meaning that they have un-subbed.
There are always a few few who say 'I love CRZ'. But no one has ever said 'I joined the game because of CRZ'. CRZ may have stopped some from quitting over empty realms (although people were mostly complaining about dying servers, which CRZ doesn't address) but I'm pretty positive that tons of players have quit over it.
Cheers.

I have had nothing but love for CRZ, with the slight exception of the tiny fraction of a second lag that sometimes happens when entering a new CRZ-enabled zone, and I know quite a few others who have much enjoyed it. Especially those leveling, they feel like the game is more alive in those long ago abandoned zones. I hope it never leaves.

I dunno what's the big fuss about how many people play the game. Is it that you refuse to play anything that isn't played by the majority? is it that you only wanna play something that is only liked by a minority?
With all due respect for those who are actually excited to see subs report numbers, for me, its all the same. I play wow because it still entertains me. When this is no longer the case, I pack my stuff and leave. I did it before. I played Lineage II for 4 long years, and it was fun, but as the fun started to decay, I began losing love for the game, and eventually just packed up and left, and haven't looked back since.
As far as I care, blizz could say tomorrow that there's only 100 players left, and it would still not be a deciding factor on whether I stay or leave.

I think it's more concern regarding what the possible future of the game is looking towards. If there were only 100 players left tomorrow, rest assured WoW would be almost certainly reduced to a single server or two and no future updates would be likely.
The more players the more likely quality will be maintained/improved and updates will continue to be released.

I dont.
Leveling is impossible in outland.
I.M.P.O.S.I.B.L.E
Pre-CRZs there was the occasional ganking, and the rare level 90 who was mining/doing arch ect swooping down and killing you.
now? 24/7 ganks all across the entire damned continent, when a group gets tired and leaves, 3 more have come to take their place. All day long, all week long, non-stop. FOREVER. You tell me how is one supposed to do quests, sink in the lore, immerse yourself in the plot, and simply relax and quest when there's over 90 people ALL YEAR LONG making sure you can't play?
this isn't traditional ganknig in which you just wait a few hours and they're gone, this is quite litterally ALL YEAR LONG.

But that's how it is for a PVP realm. You put yourself in that position by choosing that realm. Live with it (because you can't control if you're going to get gank or not) or transfer to a PVE realm.

I really don't think CRZ has negative impact in terms of losing a substantial number of subscribers. CRZ does have its annoying moments, but that's about it - annoying moments, nothing that should prevent a player from continuing play/progressing in the game. Basically, concluding that if subs are low CRZ will be removed is like saying that if subs are low enough they'll allow legendaries to be transmogged (for the record, I'd like that to happen), or they'll finally implement prestige realms that only go as high as BC content, or the various other bandwagons a handful of players have jumped on over the years.
There are a lot of other factors at play in terms of WoW's staying power compared to the competition that have a larger effect on subs. The most obvious one is probably graphics; WoW's are just old, and character models, terrain, spell effects and so on just show that. Blizzard's done what they can to keep it looking pretty good over the expansions, but they're limited by the engine they use. Which is noble (and smart, business-wise, given that WoW still dominates MMO subs) in the sense that they do this because they want more folks from a broader spectrum of PC specs to be able to play the game.
Long story short, I don't know if there will be a dip in the sub numbers - but thanks to CRZ I won't see that dip until someone posts about it here, because while playing, I see heaps of other folks getting their game on. If there is a dramatic sub loss, they've known about it long before this report will be released to the public and I've no doubt they're doing what they can to keep the game fun and attractive.
EDIT: For those saying that CRZ has ruined leveling due to ganking while questing.... you rolled on a pvp realm, man. What did you expect? If it's just that terrible for you, have a battlenet friend on a pve realm invite you to a group and you'll phase into a pve world instead. But if that's really an issue for you, wtf did you roll on a pvp realm for in the first place? Gankers aren't exactly a new development. And for the record, I play on Akama and Nathrezim - both pvp realms.
