"Big Jim" points out one of the unique things about each "breed" of pet, while many of their abilities are decided by the spec you put them in there are alot of breed based abilities that can make or break your play style. I would recommend taking a browse through this website to really get a better understanding for what each breed brings to the table for you.

Petopia kinda doesnt show exactly what buffs and debuffs you can provide at what group composition. Just use

Or just, you know, use common sense and check which buffs the group has and swap pet accordingly.
Anyway, in raids it's purely aesthetic. Everything above 5 man groups will provide all buffs and debuffs that hunter pets can provide anyway. For 5 man groups pick whatever isn't the most common class on your RDF group - I usually go with a Shale Spider (stats), a Spirit Beast (mastery), a Worm (physical damage boost), a Devilsaur (crit) and a Serpent (attack speed).
In raids go with aesthetics. I've never been able to provide any good buff for raids, no matter what I tried bringing onto the table.

The consolidated buffs UI tends to bug out pretty seriously eg. when there are two sources of certain buff it will show you as not having it, even though you can clearly target yourself and see it there.
Not to mention it doesnt check for debuffs and those are equally important.

Not true. Yes, hunters can provide all buffs other classes would, but hunter can have only one pet out (beside stampede) and often its a hard choice.

Lucky you with great group compositions.

Untrue. In 10 mans you have to have an extremely precise group composition to have all 8 buffs and all major debuffs covered.
In 25 it isa little easier, but still not a given - I've been in several LFR groups where 1 or 2 major buffs were not covred except by hunter pets (usually with a good amount of hunters though)
