Taxi mount routing

Why, in the name of the god of your choice, can Blizzard not have the taxi mounts EVER fly from departure point to destination without taking long circuitous routes that joyfully take us to every backwater flight point on the continent?
I just finished a 10 minute ride from Uldaman to Darnassus, literally encompassing the entirety of Kalimdor...that is bloody ridiculous.

I took a flight in Pandaria the other day that seemed to loop of in entirely the wrong direction so I know how you feel. On the other hand its rare to be in a genuine rush so I just spend the time checking through the Dungeon Journal or achievement progress etc. I guess it can be quite a relaxing time in an otherwise hectic session.

Also bloody impossible too, unless flight paths cross the sea these days. ;)

i always assumed that blizzard did it too show off zones the designed from an high altitude perspective.
and it became a norm from which they didnt turn away when flying mounts we're introduced.

to lets us enjoy the scenary they put so much time and work into and encourage you to get your own mount and 300% flying skill i guess. that much more rewarding when you can get yourself around without the FPS. if you still use FPS after you got 300% riding like i do sometimes then its generally BC u dont feel like steering so ill take the ride and leave the back seat driving at home. thanks blizz

I was just remembering how back in the day that flying from Booty Bay to Undercity would take 45 minutes.

Oh I played a Druid back when the good ol' hearth was 1 hour, and Moonglade -> Thunderbluff (The Only option) took 20 minutes.

It's as suggested, to show the scenery and landscape. If you want a straight shot, get on your flight mount.
Frankly I only get on flight paths when I feel like getting something to eat, stepping away, using the restroom... w/e. It's a perfect time for a break.

I used the taxis as a chance to go to the toilet or do other things while not worrying about ending up in the wrong place.
Use them for that or get on your normal mount. That would be my 10 cents.

The question the OP is really asking is why don't the taxi's just make a direct point to point flight.
The answer goes back to before I came into the game (2.3) but this is the way I understand it happened;
When you got on a taxi flight it took you to the nearest FP within flying distance in the direction you were going. You got off at that FP and took a new taxi to the next FP in the chain until you reached the end of the line. If you were missing FP's in the chain you could not go any farther. At some point they stopped making you get off and on but essentially all the rest is still pretty much the same.
Beyond those mechanics it is simply and purely a time sink. Even if taxi's flew cross country I would bet that it would still take the same amount of time. Of course YMMV.

It can be annoying at times when you are a lower level toon. Some trips should provide a portal.
Going from Stormwind to Silithus or Winterspring can be excruciating.
When I first played and rolled a human warrior and it took to level 40 to get a riding mount, Kalimdor was this this remote continent to me. I never saw parts of it until much later, when I rolled a Dranei toon.
Perhaps this was Blizzards intent, to leave certain zones more accessible to certain races to impart vastness to the WoW world.
What I really wish that they would let you do is cancel your destination at any point in flight to the nearest flight master.
There are times I wish to ride back to pick up that node before continuing on my way or reading on zone chat that my destination is under faction attack and I'm flying right into it, be nice to jump off at a prior landing spot.

If you log out before you reach your flight destination, you'll log in at the closest one you had logged out at.
Or, it used to be that way. Not sure now I guess. I don't remember the last time I took a FP.

Can't speak about the very early days, but Moonglade also had normal flight masters in Vanilla already, west (H) and east (A) of the entrance to Timbermaw Hold. What I really wish that they would let you do is cancel your destination at any point in flight to the nearest flight master.
What Rystrave said, can confirm it still behaves that way. I
think
even a /reload could do the trick. You'll notice the coin sound every time you pass a node, as you don't pay the full price up front, but in steps.
It is certainly unintuitive, of course. I wish they'd include a functionality like
InFlight
, a timer, showing true times even with
Ride Like the Wind
. That'd provide a UI element that would also offer to cancel the flight at the next step (and show which step that is)

I wish blizzard would maybe incorporate a Fast travel Feature where you pay abit more for the travel but it goes 2 times the speed or even miss the others and go straight to your destination rather than taking the set route ( around all the other flight paths ).

I was doing some dailies in Outland one year during Winter Veil to get the
Fa-la-la-la-Ogri'la
. I don't remember exactly why there were some Sha'tari Skyguard quests involved, but at any rate the Skyguard have their own flight path connecting the daily hubs in Terokkar and Blade's Edge.
So I get taxi and to my surprise it was a straight-line flight. LoL, none of this loop-de-loop and round and round.

Also, I remember when you had to explore and discover the flightmasters to use the FPs.

In MoP that has actually been brought back, no more automatic FPs, which is a good thing IMO.

That only works if you are high enough level to fly. And frankly I know it is possible for instant flights point A-B. Instant, as in pay the man, get a loading screen and there you are at your destination.
They are all in the database just waiting to be enabled and have been for years.

Because all new adventures already have a map of the world?
