i am fairly new to world of warcraft. i have leveled one toon to cap just recently (MoP release) I am working on a alt for each class on my server. So flirting with the idea of creating some more toons on a new server to expieriment with more class/race combos as i have the limit with 11 toons on my home server and can not do this. I have read some about RP servers but am a bit confused. Am i understanding correctly that the difference in that and PvE server is im not allowed to abbreviate things like GTFO and your have to act out as your actual race what you type? can anyone break this down in a little more simple terms for a noob?

An RP server is just like a regular server for the most part. But if you are in a role play with others, using leet speak, abbreviations and the rest are a no-no.
However, the idea that an entire Role Playing server is always in character is just a long standing stereotype.

if theres strict name policy for your toon how would you go about creating one? i mean so its like if im a Orc it has to have something from Orc heritage in his name? or this is another stereotype not enforced?

Although abbreviations and such are allowed in dungeons and raids, where it matters more to be fast than to keep the atmosphere.
And most dungeons are cross-server anyway.

It doesn't have to be roleplay based; but if you do put in something really really stupid, expect people to report it and you will more then likely end up having to change it.

got ya thanks for the reply guys. basically just sounds like the general feedback is that the servers for people with anal retentive attention to detail and more strict guidelines for game play.

No, not really. The thing is a role playing server is about the characters that the players create, and having some monkey brained troll with the name 'Illidanscack' screaming and insulting everyone needs to be hit with a banhammer.
Really, if you are going to play on an RP server, just remember to have common curtsey and decency to the others on the server and you'll be just fine....if you want to be a pain in the butt, then the PVP servers are where you should be =P.

Adding to this, hope you don't mind.
Yes before anyone comments, this is copy pasted from the: "
Role-playing Realms Policy
-
battle.net
/
support page.
".
RP / RP-PVP Realms
These two types of realm. They have a strict naming policy unlike other realm types.
Non-Medieval / Fantasy Character Names
This category includes any Non-Medieval or Non-Fantasy names (i.e. Slipnslide, Robotman, Technotron).
If a player is found to have such a name, he / she may:
Be assigned a randomly generated name
Be given the appropriate additional penalty if the name violates standard naming rules.
Real World Referencing Names
This category includes both clear and masked names which are references to very well known people, characters, places, or icons (i.e. Britneyspears, Austinpowers, Mcdonalds, Georgewashington, Newyork)
If a player is found to have such a name, he / she may:
Be assigned a randomly generated name
Be given the appropriate additional penalty if the name violates standard naming rules.
Partial or Complete Sentence Names
This category includes names which consist of multiple (generally more than 2) words strung together to create partial or complete sentences (i.e. Inyourface, Welovebeef, Howareyou)
If a player is found to have such a name, that player may:
Be assigned a randomly generated name
Be given the appropriate additional penalty if the name violates standard naming rules.
Next part:
Harassment
-
Verbal / Physical Harassment Targeting Role-Players
This category includes:
Players that specifically target role-players for verbal or physical abuse (not limited to offensive language).
If a player is found to be targeting role-players with the specific intent to harass, they may be temporarily suspended from the game.

first time players i would suggest PvE.
this way you're never forced into an unwanted PvP situation. and you also dont have too keep in mind the rules RP servers have (though those seem less enforced nowadays).
and you will be able too just play without much worry.

First-time, PvE unless you're dead set on PvP. Even then, I'd recommend considering getting to cap on a PvE realm and then transferring to a PvP realm later if that suits you.
Hate being grouped in LFD with the RP shelter realms. Too easy to get actioned for a minimal amount of swearing. I, and plenty of others on my realm, chat how we like without having to worry about the average report-hungry noob. Yes, people get reported, but GMs here aren't bad people dead-set on enforcing Hello Kitty language. Said one non-derogatory "swear" word not aimed at anyone or anything in a dungeon with one RPer in it, got actioned within hours. Total BS.
That being said, if you like chatting without major restrictions or the feeling that you're going to be attacked for talking, don't go to an RP realm.

Aye the RP rules are far more laid back in regards to names.
As for the 'report hungry noob' thing; I report anyone I see doing the spam, insulting language and all the rest when it comes to LFD. But I do it so I won't be grouped up with monkey brained people like that again for the rest of my play period.

Just remember, if you select PvP that means that high level players will be able to kill you anywhere anytime, and there will be no such thing as fair fight most of the time. If you happen to level in Strangleton Valley (for example) and stop at quest hub and start reading quest there is a chance that some max level horde warrior will come and Thunder Clap everyone around to death. And they will be allowed to do that.

let me just speak on behalf of PvP so you don't get the idea that it's all bad or filled with numbnuts.
Yes...hi level players will gank lowbies. Does it happen all the time.."NO".
I've been solely a PvP server player for 5 years. I survived to tell the tale.
It's just that the bad taste of someone camping you also camps the memory of players leaving the impression that it happens all the time.
In truth...if your a true RP player then the battle between horde and alliance plays a part.
Otherwise what's the point of having factions on PvE servers other then to provide preferences of appearance.
PvP server will force you to keep your wits about. Ask for help/give help if being out numbered...etc.
it will add an additional element to the game. Wondering what that opposing faction player is thinking.
Sometimes a simple wave will give intentions. Opposing players waving to each other usually signifies a truce.
But not always..some players are sneaky. :P
Just remember...that's their role...to perpetuate the battle between factions. I never took it personal.
Mind you.. I do play with a sense of honor. I won't seek out and gank lowbies....buuuuut if I'm in a zone doing something and an opposing lowbie rides past me without giving the token wave of respect, like I've always done,....thinking I'm no one to fear...think again :P
But if they do wave or bow...I wave back and leave them in peace. On a few occasions I've even helped out.
Don't know what it is about being killed by a real player that gets under the skin of some people, it's just a game...you will die many times from quest/dungeons/raid over the course of playing anyway.
But if you have a problem with it and you prefer the serenity of quiet questing by yourself...then stay PvE.

"doing the spam"
"monkey brained people"
I suppose you would be one of them. I loathe being grouped with that kind of person. They think they're better just because they censor themselves for one reason or another. It doesn't mean you're better or more intelligent, it just means you close yourself off more than the people you think you're looking down upon.
I block people that cry about it so I don't have to deal with them myself in LFD. Can't take a few words that you personally deem inappropriate? Perfect, place me on ignore, because I don't want to hear the whining, and you can remain sheltered from those "nasty" words. Just don't go on the rest of the Internet, lol.

I do go on the rest of the internet; and if it's on a forum like this one, I report the trolls, same as I do in game. If you want to be an ^&*!@#$ behind the screen, go right ahead; but that doesn't mean I have to put up with it when there is a way to keep the %^&* from being spewed.

so at least on the PvP server its horde sticking with horde and alli sticking with alli? or will a fellow horde "gank" you as well?

The only place you can be ganked by the same server are in the free for all arenas; PVP means player vs player and it's only the factions against each other.

Don't get excited, I'm primarily referring to people that cry about words they don't like, complain about it "ruining their game," then going ahead and attempting to ruin the other person's game. :p

As said, I report the trolls and the asses; as long as you don't fall under that category, you have nothing to 'fear' from me.
