Do it like runescape does, only you alone will see your own farm.
That's probably how it will be, to keep the griefing idiots from corpse camping the farm plots.

It'll probably end up like this. Hopefully it won't be as aggravatingly tedious as Runescape farming is though (although I guess you can automate Runescape farming...)

Problem with RS farming is that it requires real time for the end result
Which in some cases, literally hours/days AND you could end up getting nothing unless you made sure it stayed disease free
That's why I dislike Runescape farming =(

WoW is going farmville... My worst nightmare, to be honest, since I never play on regular intervals. Some day I might be online almost 12h/day, other days I just do other stuff and neglects checking in on 4/5 days ...

SPOILER ALERT:
There will also be a new kind of quest line that players will face, a to-be-named style that brings riddles to the quest givers and forces players to solve these riddles before they can progress. One sample quest involves an NPC named Loremaster Dennis which will call into question the lore surrounding the players journey and force them to make some difficult choices.
That would be fun! I love riddles.
Back to the farming business, I look forward to it. As long as it reaps rewards (pets, rep, whatever), I'm game.

I wonder if certain people will try to grow...certain things...?
Let us see if I can deduce which races might be inclined to grow which crops.
Draenei: Azure Snapdragons.
Worgen: Wolfsbane to help control their baser instincts.
Dwarfs: Obviously has to be barley and hops.
Humans: Potatoes and cabbage.
Gnomes: Soya beans to be turned into oil to run their various machines.
Night Elfs: Ginseng, it just seems to fit.
Panderan: Rice.
Undead: Hemlock a very deadly substance perfect for making poison.
Tauren: Prairie grass and lots of it for all those stomachs.
Orcs: Cactus apples.
Blood Elfs: Bloodthistle.
Goblins: Whatever can be sold for the most profit.
Last and by no means least Trolls: A certain medicinal herb legal with a prescription in some states such as California.
