What are Heirloom Items?
Heirloom Items were first introduced in patch 3.0.2. Since then, more and more BOA's (Bind on Account) items have been released. These items can be mailed to other characters on the server,
even across factions!
Once a character receives a BOA, it will scale to their level and increase in potency as the character levels up. Plate BOA's will even count as mail items for the first 40 levels, so there is no need to buy more than one BOA because of the armor requirements.
There are many ways to obtain BOA's:
Justice Points
Honor Points
Champion's Seals
Darkmoon Prize Tickets
Guild vendor
is the only place you can get some BOA's
While BOA items can be enchanted, there are some restrictions. BOA's are considered to be ilevel 1, no mater what character level they are scaled too. This means that only enchants which don't have an item level requirements can be applied on the items. Once a enchant is applied to the item, it will stay on the item even if sent through the mail. You can change enchants on BOAs like any other item, by re-enchanting them.
The Original set of BOA's were functional from level 1 to level 80. The new BOA's scale all the way up to level 85. Old BOA's can be upgraded. When using the BOA's that scale to level 80, the experience bonus they provide will no longer work once you hit level 81. So use them while you are a level 80, but start looking for upgrades after that unless you have the upgraded versions. Experience bonuses stop at level 85. So unlike the old BOA's as soon as you hit 85, you should start looking for upgrades.
Since BOA's are considered to be ilevel 1, they will bring down your "average ilevel" this can be a problem at higher levels when you are required to have a certain ilevel to enter dungeons. Try and keep items that would be equipped in these slots in your bags. That will fool the item level average.

The BOA Mentality
BOAs are meant to increase the speed of leveling. If you want to level fast BOA items are the way to go. Efficiency when leveling is very important, and you should take a certain gearing mentality with you. For the most part BOAs are itemized better than most of the gear you will find. Yet, there may be quests or drops in the game that will edge out your BOAs slightly. Do not be fooled. These items will only be better than the BOAs for a short time, are are never worth the experience loss.
The enchants recommended here are the best of the best, there other alternatives, but they are not listed. These items will be with you 81 or more levels, spend the extra gold and get the best enchants for the items. The low level enchants will mean close to nothing at higher levels, but from levels 1-30 they are invaluable, and are defiantly worth the time and gold to get them.

Holy
Holy BOA's are less strait forward than Prot and Ret. There are a lack of plate healing BOA's so your going to need to use other armor types. Anyone who is leveling Holy is going to need to make the choice, 5% intellect or 30% Exp gain. If you choose the BOA's you will not receive the bonus from
. This is ok though, because the 5% intellect lose is minimal compared to the extra speed while leveling. You won't need to make that choice until level 50 since you won't know plate specialization until then.

Legs and Additional Rings.
TL;DR : BOA Legs and Rings are not available at this time.
The BOA legs and rings are items that exist in the game code. These items have been designed but have not yet been released. The most prominent rumor is that the legs and rings will be release in patch 4.2 and be a reward for the new Firelands daily quests. When the items are realased the guide will be updated. For now, only the other items exist. When the rings are release it may be more beneficial to use two of the new BOA rings instead of the Dread Pirate Ring. Again, we will need to wait until more information is released.

If you're gonna give up the plate specialization already, why not use the
cloth heirloom
chest?
That was a mistake.
Mystical Vest of Elements
is now properly listed. It is the mail option because more armor is better when no other stats are different.
The reason you would use the cloth helm and not the mail helm is because of the stat difference. There is no stat difference for chest pieces.

Why use the Agil + Dodge enchant for a Caster cloak over >
Subtlety
.
Of course there are no other better choices for enchants.

most people use heirlooms for lvling through bgs
Not true. Random dungeons are still popular. As is just general questing, in this day and age of Cata. (Maybe not so much in 12 months time.)

I'll add in a PVP section for heirlooms later tonight. totally forgot about them =P. I believe Random dungeons are better for leveling now because of the quests they put into each. Plus, depending on what server you are on, PVP can suck for leveling because you never win.

Edit: Never mind link works now. But Pvp Shoulders?
Edit #2: Screw the Shoulders,Chest, and Weapon. They cap at 80. Give me the Cloak,Helm and Legs please.
I'll more then likely will just use the dps gear for both specs.

I added in a section for PVP gear. There isn't much, so I made a new table with all specs.
As for the tanking gear. Here is the new table. I won't add it in till the patch hits tho.

Hey Hatt, just a few things:
- You can chant + 150 HP on chest, not just 100.
- +4 stats is fairly hard to come by, you might wanna add next best thing (+3stats).
- I know they are numerous, but could you post a link to various head/shoulder/legs enchants.
- You haven't listed any prot shoulders (pvp).
- There is an axe from Archaeology (Niff something or other) which is usable at level 71, but has an ilvl of 226, thus making it better than equal level req. legendaries, easily better than anything for prot for a few levels.
- The threat from 2x "caster" trinkets might be superior for threat than the "melee" options for a prot tank, not sure on that.
Nice guide so far though =)

I've been waiting for a bit more information from wowhead on the new prot items before editing the sections and posting this up as a sticky. As of yesterday, the PTR links were still displaying as not found. It looks like today that has been fixed. I will make some edits and then request the sticky.
As for the enchants, your going to want the best of the best, because you are using these items for 81+ levels. As for the shoulder and head enchants. There aren't any options that I know of available in game to use anymore. Do you know of any?
I haven't listed any of the lower level archaeology items, because the leveling process is quick, and players won't be spending much time at those levels. If a player has a BOA or other regular item that he wants to use, that will be his judgement call.
Prot paladins used to use the caster trinkets instead of the melee trinkets because the value of the mana recovery at low levels was way superior to the health recovery. Now that the system prots use to recoup mana has changed, the value of the health gain is more than the mana gained. I'm pretty confident that the caster trinkets would still provide more threat generated, but prots don't really need that additional threat.
Prots will use the same shoulders as Ret for PVP, I'll at that line in the table, thanks.
Cheers,
Hat

Well, more threat comes from more damage, and more damage -> HP gain imo (hence using SoT>SoI for instance), so caster trinkets > melee ones.
Shoulder/head enchants aren't usable from level 1 any more, but that shouldn't preclude them from entry into your post.
Head: Libram's, Borean Armor Kit, Heavy Borean Armor Kit
Shoulder: Borean + Heavy Borean kits (as above), Aldor/scryer chants, SoHodir chants, level 70 pvp stam/resi shoulder enchant, WG chants.
Leg: Numerous, but as you haven't included BoA legs, I wouldn't bother with these (especially as nobody knows where you can actually find these.

The proc doesn't occur very often, only when you actually get the killing blow. Considering that it's just haste rating, you can often pick up better tanking trinkets as you level. I used to use
Strength of the High Chief
on my Warrior tank right up until Northrend, because I couldn't find something decent to replace it through questing.
If you PvP, you can grab tanking trinkets from PvP rewards.

ITS DONE!
I would like to ask svirve to replace the
The Paladin Heirloom Thread (3.3)
with this topic. I will also be reporting the post for a sticky because I feel that is it a finished and up to date guild that provides more information that the current one.
Thank you
The proc doesn't occur very often

The Proc occurs VERY often!
I have a question for Prot trinkets hat. How helpful is the proc from 2x
Swift Hand of Justice
? My lil' 63 Paladin is using
Lifestone
and
Force of Will
but are actual tanking trinkets better or should I get
Swift Hand of Justice
s?
2% health on mob kill is what makes these trinkets so amazing for a paladin.
Discerning Eye of the Beast
used to be the way to go for paladin tanking trinkets, because there was no way to gain mana at low levels when leveling as prot. Every time your killed a mob you would get mana back. They were invaluable for leveling. The added bonus was the extra damage gain from the spell power.
Now, with the changes to 4.0 mana is no longer a problem at any level. Judge, and the mana return acquired now scales with level and abilities. Since mana is no longer a problem, we look at the
Swift Hand of Justice
when leveling as a protection paladin, with full BOAs and a normal rotation, YOU will be top dps in every dudgeon until level 70 and sometimes even up to level 80. You will be making most of the killing blows on trash mobs. Especially at lower levels the 2% health gain on kill is a huge assistance to your healer, and to your group. There will be little to no stops in a 5 man when you are using these trinkets.
Cheers,
Hat
